I have always wanted a flame angel but I always talk myself out of getting one because of the risks with them eating coral.

I'm getting close to my desired limit of fish in my tank and I really want one.

What should I do? Do I scrap the idea and move on, or do I risk it?

I guess I need to find a new fish to obsess over.

I really like the colors of wrasses, I have 3 and they are gorgeous.

my girlfriend used to obsess over that fish, intill she found other fish lol Do you like chevron tangs? or helfrichi firefish? Thats what she bought cause she couldent get the flame angle :) and ill tell you think much im happy as heck she bought these 2 fish. there amazing.

There are two types of reefers: Those that have tried a Flame Angel and learned the hard way and those that are about to try a Flame Angel and learn the hard way. ;)

In my pre-Hurricane Sandy tank I had a Flame Angel in a mixed reef with SPS, LPS some softies and a few clams. The angel was well behaved and occasionally nipped at coral without much damage. It was a gift (the fish), but I definitely felt like I didn't get a lot of PE on my SPS. I don't know that I would have added the Flame angel if it hadn't been given to me. Unfortunately the fish is no longer, and I considered it briefly for my new tank, but I won't do it. I was really tempted too at my LFS where they had a cute little 2" beauty, but I passed.

There are a lot of really nice looking fish out there. I love the pygmy angels, but I doubt I'll ever risk putting one in my reef again.

I have had two flame angels. Neither have touched coral in my LPS dominated tanks. I lost the first due to a stressful move. The second is still thriving in my 65gal tank. He is my algae muncher, when coral in my frag tank get a bit of hair algae on them I transfer them to the 65 for my flame angel to clean up.

I spend about 80% of my hobby money at the same LFS, he has always been honest and sold me quality products. He will not sell me a flame angel. LOL

I have a regular firefish and I like him, I really like that one you mentioned as well. I'm maxed out for tangs. I have a blue hippo, yellow, and a lavendar tang in my 125. They have their own space and are doing well. No more tangs.

I want a blotched anthias, and my LFS has 2 atm. I'm just waiting until I have mastered the water quality enough to feel confident to buy a fish that expensive. blotched anthias - Google Search

out of 8 flame angels i have kept over the past 11 years, only 1 nipped at corals. all others were completely reef safe.

Thats the next fish me and my girlfriend are getting the blotched anthias we have 2 sunburst anthias right now with the chevron tang and other fishies.

I have a flame angel in my 92 gal and it has never bothered my corals. I learned a long time ago to keep them happy with plenty of the right food that they won't fell the need to munch your good stuff. The colors look great under the light as well.

ive had 4 flame angels. A lot died in the begining but lasted at least a few months. I have one now for 4 months and healthy, he nipped on a few corals maybe 2 months after he was first introduced. This lasted maybe a week at most and then stopped and hast done it since. The bright red it brings to a tank is really beautiful and I think definitely worth a shot for you.

I have a flame, lemonpeel, multicolor, Imperator, Swallowtail, Regal and Joculator in my reef.

i have flame and regal angel with some more on the way in the future when the funds permit...all depends on what corals you have and what corals that fish will prefer...my regal has left everything in my tank alone including the zooanthids which i relegated to be a startup food for him and my flame has never once touched a coral in any way... the success is still very dependent on the individual fish but you can get both sides of the coin answers because there is no cut and dry answer that is just an absolute truth...if you see one that you think is small and you can train to eat what is NOT your coral then i would say go for it.

I have a Flame Angel now in my 120g. I have lots of z & p's in the tank, not once I see it nip at the corals. Well balance variety of food makes him happy, the bright red color just stands out. I got him really young a little more than an inch, I guess he hasn't tasted any corals in the wild when he was caught.
