Thoughts/Opinions On A Flame Angel in a LPS/SPS Reef Tank? The Good, The Bad?

It's a hit or miss. I took the chance with a flame angel in a mixed reef and never had a problem. Key is keep a super close eye and have a backup to getting rid of it if it does.

But then again I had mine and never once had a problem.

It's been done but is always hit or miss. Make sure it's well fed and hope for the best. They're amazing fish and add tons of color to a tank.

I've got one and 6 types of euphillia as well as a pearl bubble, elegans, and other corals of every type. He looks like he nips at things but I have not notice any damage whatsoever. The corals do not even get upset. Its more like he picked something off them. I am very happy with mine. No trouble at all.

There are a variety of experiences with them. There is always a possibility of them picking, but my personal suspicion is that it has to do with feeding schedule and regimen. For the most part there are those that have tried them a few times and always had them pick or those that never had them pick.

I had nothing but problems with them (and roughly 5 other dwarf angels). All of them picked at my fleshy LPS corals so I had to remove them.

I've tried 3 different flame angels and all picked on corals. I wish they wouldn't had because there a very awesome fish.

It's always a matter of time. I've had many over the years, some do not nip for years and then one day acquire a taste for coral. IMO they're worth it for the beautiful crimson color they bring, but I also do not keep expensive coral, either.

I have no problems with the flame picking on corals, but he does bully newly added fish. I have a coral beauty and a flame. The flame likes to chase the coral beauty once in awhile.

Seems like I've had a Flame Angel in all my softy mixed tanks.
Never had a problem with any of them.

I've had one for close to two years with no problems and then one day it went crazy for zoas and went through a few good size colonies in a matter of days before i was able to catch it.

Lots of people touched on the concept that they'd rather eat the yummy prepared fish foods, but will pick at corals if they're still hungry (or bored?).

I've also heard that if you get a very young specimen, and begin it on a feeding regimen ASAP, they are less likely to learn to pick corals.

That's all conjecture though, as I've never kept one in a reef tank.
