hi fellow reefers,

I never used flourish nitrogen by seachem but I need to add some nitrate to my sps tank. My tank is clean and add to add some flourish nitrogen. I have a 210 gallon with a 40 breeder. Thanks for your help.

has 1 ppm copper just to let you know.
you can get spectracide stump remover from lowes if you want the pure stuff.

as far as seachem flourish nitrogen. i would put an initial 20ml in and test after an hour. that should raise you around 1-2ppm. i use seachem because i believe whatever ppb or ppt copper i introduce will be absorbed by an algae.

How do you know it has 1 ppm copper, and if so, that the Spectrum product doesn't?

somewhere on the internetz the ingredients call for .001% cu. @twilliard pointed it out.

i cant be sure about spectracide since it isnt lab grade. it does state 100% potassium nitrate iirc. @ReefMadScientist showed me that one.

Are you sure you are not confusing Flourish Nitrogen with Flourish?

The latter lists copper, but Flourish Nitrogen does not. :)

Potassium nitrate is what I use now as the cost for seachem was just too much to warrant using it.
I have to dose a lot to keep my no3 up to 2ppm with flourish.
With the potassium nitrate it is cheaper to get the same results.

I will be writing an article on potassium nitrate that will be in depth on maintaining a correct ratio for tanks that run in the higher DKH

Ya that was my bad I do believe!
Looked at the wrong bottle.
Flourish nitrogen is potassium nitrate with urea

Also I just sent out today my triton water test to see if there are any increases of potassium
So I am waiting for my results before posting my article.

Thanks guys. I don't want to overdose. Currently my nitrate reading is 1 ppm. I will add 20ml like Russ265 and test to see where it's at. What's ideal for a sps dominated tank? Currently parameters are listed below.

Alk 8.5
Cal 550 (lowering it)
Mag 1300
Nitrate 1ppm
Phosphate 0
Salinity 1.026

my potassium increased from 420 to 440 ppm over the course of 3 months.

Yeah the Spectracide we were talking about is 100% Potassium Nitrate. I know a few people who use it as a dip also.

Those values seem fine to me, although phosphate may also limit corals if it is too low.

FWIW, adding nitrate may well drive phosphate even lower by encouraging growth of organisms that take up phosphate and nitrate.

While I'm neither suggesting it does contain copper nor that folks shouldn't use this product, without doubt it has MANY impurities at ppm levels, and copper may be one of them.

For example, when I tested various hobby brands of calcium chloride, I found all of aluminum, barium, beryllium, cadmium, boron, chromium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, silicon, sodium, strontium, and zinc. Nine of these were above 0.1 ppm in at least one brand.

So when talking about low levels of impurities, exactly what the nature of the primary ingredient is doesn't always give a complete picture of what you are adding.

this is also my experience. sometimes i need to bump po4 every now and then.

really depends on the light energy for corals to use.

id start at 3-5ppm nitrate
.02-.06 po4 and see what they do in 2 weeks.

if they start browning back off the nutrients or up the light/flow.

really... you will just have to observe the tank.

I dosed flourish nitrogen (20ml) yesterday and it seems the nitrate reading is now at 3ppm. Also, lowering the Alk back down to 7.5. What can I do to get the phosphate up to .02-.04?

flourish phosphate 5ml seems appropriate. be mindful of your front glass though.

What do you do now to export nutrients?
