FluxRX not beating my GHA, second dose?

Today is day 19 running FluxRX and there is no change to my green hair algae. I dosed 5 large scoops into my 143g system. What’s the protocol for adding a second dose? Should I do a water change first and then add it? Should I just add more on top of it? I have spent a collective 3 hours manually pulling this algae from my tank and scrubbing rocks over the past 2 weeks..

I have reduced feeding, reduced photoperiod, adjusted spectrum to eliminate red and green and reduce whites…I need help here.

How old is your tank and what are the nitrate and phosphate levels? For manual removal, I recommend using this since it speeds that process up significantly:

When I used FluxRx, I did it at 20% of the recommended dose. I did two doses 3 weeks apart if I recall correctly. I did a water change in connection with the second dose. With each dose I did a round of manual scrubbing of the rocks.

I find fluconazole as an alternative and often not a solution. You have to battle GHA (If GHA) manually to win. Please post pics of tank under bright white lighting to confirm i.d.
I would place rock in a container of tank water and pull off as much as you can by hand and scrub the rest with a firm toothbrush and some 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Return to tank, reduce white light intensity and number of hours of white lighting and add some snails such as :
Astrea
cerith
turbo grazer
trochus

A Pencil urchin

8-10 Caribbean blue leg hermits

Are you using RODI water or tap water from the faucet ?
What is your phosphate level?
Is tank at or near a window?

0.01 phosphate and 8.1 nitrate. Tank is approaching 1 year old, started with dry rock

0.01 phosphates, 8.1 nitrates, 4 tangs a foxface 3 urchins and a ton of CUC including turbos astreas trochus ceriths hermits etc.

RODI water, tank is about 6 feet from a window that remains closed…

Rocks are epoxied and most acros are encrusted onto the rockwork..not much I can do regarding removing rocks. I manually remove weekly and scrub rocks with toothbrush but it grows back within the week…i know my readings are false and the nutrients are soaked up into the GHA. I’m not sure if I need a Refugium, an algae scrubber, and gfo reactor, or what.

This is kind of where I am at. Low nutrients that now the explosion of GHA is sucking up. Dinos on the hair algae that are now gone with UV in tank. Trying Flux Rx and heavy daily manual removal. Sucks. I have a refugium that so far Flux Rx has not killed the caulerpa so maybe it wasn't a strong enough dose, I tried the "microdose". I may add and algae turf scrubber since that should grow the GHA in the sump instead.

Also, tang and foxface will not eat it, no matter the length and my urchin prefers my coralline on the back wall.

Dude this is my exact situation….im not sure where to go at this point. Its been 19 days of fluconazole without any improvement at all, and I’ve heard I need to possibly let it run for 3-4 weeks and then dose again, so..trying to find out details on that but people just want to ask for other info as if I haven’t tried it already…

Yeah maybe an algae turf scrubber. Nothing will eat this stuff. It's taken off since I raised my lights to add coral now I have frags sitting on my frag rack with rocks covered with algae.

Opposed to GHA, this may be dino. Pics are a little dim to fully see but could be also after using flux, dying algae

Dude it’s algae just trust me lol it’s green hair algae everywhere man. Look at the picture with my black tang…as I mentioned in a previous post I eradicated the Dino’s using UV, and green hair algae continued to grow, smother my zoas and get stuck on my acros as it blows around the tank…

If you are depending on curtains, blinds or shades. . . UV is strong and will penetrate them. The low phos level would not contribute to GHA but rather dino which consumes Phos and light

Can you provide brighter light and if GHA which I just mentioned can be dying GHA, has to be countered with no white or low light (for coral).

Sorry man it’s just that I’m actually not asking for advice regarding the methods in which you’re suggesting….and every time I try to obtain information on this topic my post gets hijacked asking for nutrients, mantainenace routines, whether or not there’s any windows next to my tank etc. I understand this is a bandaid but I have zoas dying….this entire post was regarding fluconazole (FluxRX) and you’ve made it about other routes of treatment that I have already gone through over the course of 3 months and have had zero improvement. I don’t need your advice on whether or not it’s GHA, this is not an identification post. This is regarding a dosage schedule for FluxRX.


In my previous system, which I may add was in the same exact spot, with zero GHA…I used fluconazole once and the GHA was replaced by coralline algae. I’m attempting a similar approach.

If flux hasn't started working yet then it's not going to in my experience. That stuff is very effective on what its designed for. Gotta try something different. The difficult part is finding out what the different is.

Unpopular opinion microbater7 or clean once a week in a reduced dose.

Man this is the exact same algae that I have in my tank. It comes back in like 36 hours no matter how much manual removal you do, doesn't care about nutrient levels at all and isn't touched by flux Rx. If you ever find a solution to this stuff let me know please.

I had a similar problem to this about 3 months ago.

I was scrubbing the rocks with a toothbrush daily and it would grow back within a week once I stopped scrubbing.

I didn't try FluxRX as that has only ever worked for Bryopsis for me.

I found a product by Continuum Aquatics - Clean Equation M which did effectively clean up the problem within a month. I was still scrubbing daily, but the GHA did not come back when I stopped.

The product claims not to be an algaecide - I don't know what's in it but it worked for me.
Nothing was harmed in my tank.
There was a minor cyano outbreak after i stopped dosing but that was easily fixed.

Might be worth a try if you have tried everything else.
