Hello fellow reefers, I'm about to make a trip to Miami this weekend. Are there any store worth stopping by? We have a few nice one in Houston, but is there anything worth looking at at Miami? Also is it worth the extra hours to drive up to key west to see some snorkeling? Thanks!

Instead of going all the way to Key West, save some time and drive half the distance to Key Largo and visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, they have very affordable snorkel charters :)

Here's a video I made of my trip :)

Aquatic Jewels in Hollywood is a nice store. It’s small but the staff are friendly and they have some nice corals and fish at very fair prices. They often have some rare fish (I’ve seen goldflake angels, lennardi wrasse, etc) and I love their dropoff display tank. I bought a longnose hawkfish while down there and brought him all the way home with me to NJ because at the time I couldn’t find them anywhere local lol!

Nice! I will add it to the list to swing by thanks!

I went last year for college visits and saw aquatic Jewls. I reccomend they were very nice, priced fairly, knowledgeable when I went they had a marine biologist on staff:) also another was another buyt I forgot the name it was a smaller shop but was alos nice with huge colonies for cheap they were healthy and colored nicely. They also had stff like a gem tang. not gunna lkie on the outside the place looked awful lol.

South Beach is one of the destination, not sure about the people watching. I do want to see some blue water! We got grey/brown here....lol

aquatic Jewls? Let me add it, not 100% sure if I will make them all but I will try!

Aquatic jewels in Hollywood, moved its location about 3 weeks ago , they are still building out the the inside of their store , tanks systems ect , and have very little inventory , I was their about 5 days ago . Aquarium kingdom in Fort lauderdale has the best selection of LPS & SPS in south florida , but do not carry many fish, about 2 blocks away is Exotic Aquatic , which has a much better fish selection , and a decent LPS selection . Personally i would opt for a snorkeling trip to Pennekamp in Key Largo as suggested above . Its about a 45 min trip from Miami ( down, not up )LOL . not as much reef as the old days ( many bleaching events) but still plenty to see .Summer is usually better also as low winds , and very calm seas provides much better visibility when under water . you can snorkel inshore ,and offshore ( offshore at Pennekamp is less than 2 miles from shore) most snorkel trips includes a stop to Molasses Reef , if your not a coral snob , theirs a fish highway there . you'll see what i mean if you go . regardless definitely do a morning trip , our summers here provide us with daily late afternoon storms.

I believe Aquarium King just got a lot of fish in stock at least they've been advertising their list was very long

Sweet thanks, looks like a snorkeling morning trip is due for! I'll definitely be looking at AK.

Aquarium King is a spot he moved to recently and the place is gorgeous. He made all these rimless tanks himself custom that are gorgeous and has a koi pond in store too. Need to take the kid there, only been over once since he moved.

Aquatic Jewels???? Really? I wouldn't suggest it. I was just there this weekend to buy a check valve for a friend and the place was a disaster. Don't get me wrong, the owner was really nice and super helpful, but not much of a place with "Wow Factor" or selection. Penekamp is a great idea btw, but in Broward there's a few places I'd recommend over AJ.....Blue Seas is a MUST! On University Dr. He's a bit pricy on higher end coral, but he has phenomenal coral variety. $5 & up to several $100. There are 2 coral shops on Oakland Park Blvd & Andrews. Aquarium Kingdom is the name of one I believe. In Miami there's Strictlyfish....you'd have to look it up on Google maps, I think it's in Hialeah(only been once) but they had nice pieces....in Boca there's Barrier Reef on Glades Rd & 2nd Ave.....then there is Wellington, 40 min drive north of Broward....2 places: Tanks Alot on Lantana Rd.....and my personal fav...Blue Earth Corals! This guy has some outrageous pieces and cheap because he pays no rent in the shack that he lives in(lol) because it's on a nursery piece of land. I believe all these places have websites or Instagram pages( I know I follow a few on Instagram)....plus when you get here, go to Google Maps and type in "aquarium shops" and you will get more than those that I have mentioned, especially in Miami.
Good Luck on your trip and enjoy my town! (I live in Fort Lauderdale)

My last time there was about a year ago so not sure if there was a major change since then but it was a very nice little shop back then. I’m curious as to what happened.

I will be in and out of Fort L, wife got some family there. We are staying in Miami so snorkeling is a must on the list. Looks like Blue seas, Blue Earth Corals is worth the checking out if its your fav. Yes, I can always google "aquarium shops". But they won't take me to the ones what the locals know, if they have good stuff and worth the stopping by. There are some fish store in Houston I would not recommend anyone to come by, unless its on the way. Thanks for the help 1 more day and counting! I'm excited , gonna get my Gopro ready for the snorkeling!

Ok readers.... How about stores in Miami Beach/ Miami airport area?? Will be there for 2nd part of my vacation in two weeks.
