In one of my tanks I have a dog face and Niger trigger and they both still eat very well but they look like they have a mild disease. I was wondering what you guys think it is? I’m hoping it’s not velvet. Could I do hypo or should I just keep pristine water and use selcon. My macro algae in my tank had a lot of gunk and I had a nitrate spike I did a water change that hopefully fixed that.

Yeah but I’m young and already in debt $1000+ so I wouldn’t be able to spend any more money

It is multiplying very fast I think it is velvet. Is it too late to start hypo?

He is still eating. I just fed him
If it is still eating and not breathing fast, it isn’t velvet.

I still think it is ich or maybe flukes. The trouble with ich parasites is they reproduce geometrically, so near the end of an infection, you run out of time because the next group of attacking ich trophonts will be so numerous that they overwhelm the fish.

This is him this morning. This isn’t looking good. I got it down to 1.014 over night.

Would ttm in a 10 gallon and a 30 work better?

No - because with TTM, you need to have a clean, disease free tank to move the fish into while your display lays fallow for 60 days. With hyposalinity in the display itself, the ich parasites are killed after the 30 day treatment and the fish can remain right there.

they are both empty and I could set it up with water from other display

If I were to remove some sponge from other ick free Dt and seed two tanks that are downstairs would that work just cleaning it out every couple days?

If there are flukes involved, TTM wouldn't get them unless you are doing TTM with hypo. The hypo already treats both, so to me it seems like a lot of work with not point. Just my opinion. I will add that I really like TTM, just not in this situation.

Go ahead and get the specific gravity down to 1.009. The fish just have to survive the next couple days while the ich/flukes drop off. If they make it past 72 hours, they will be fine. It will be a rough couple of days, though.

Should I keep lights turned off and also my temp is at 83-84 is that good?

If they die you can leave the tank without fish for a while and let it cruise.

Then get back in the fight.

I don't know if lights matter or not.

On temperature, I run my tanks under 80. Some people go a little higher. I would NOT raise temperature to help combat disease in saltwater, as it stresses the fish more.

I have it at 1.009 now is all I can do is wait and hope is is ok in 72 hours?

I would be careful with this. If you have a fallow tank, keeping the Temp up slightly can help speed the death of the parasites (because there are no fish) - if you have fish - you may be doing more harm than good. They are just multiplying faster.

There is no way to predict that the fish is 'safe' at 72 hours. However, after decreasing salinity, you should see improvement (If the fish is going to make it) - As you've said yourself - it does look somewhat worse this AM

That high of a temperature actually makes ich infections worse. Is it that warm due to the room conditions, or can you lower it to 79 or so?

Keep at least some lights on so that the fish can see their food.

I had it that high because I thought that the temperature would increase the life span of them and since it’s in hypo I thought they would die off quicker.

It’s at 1.009 right now full hypo but I doubt he’s going to make it he has so much slime and some sand on it. The mucus looks like it’s pealing off even.
