Frag tank set up ....

very true why risk it
I look at it this way, if you have one system with everything tied in and something happens while you are gone.... BOOM, death.

If you have two systems and a heater explodes in one.. you will be doing A LOT less work trying to get back to 100% again... If your entire system crashes you are at ground zero.....

A second system to me is like insurance... sure, you can work less and not have it.. but when tragedy strikes, you will be wishing you had put in the extra work.

Sounds like many of us are in "the same boat". I chose to combine my frag tank to one of my displays because I have four different tank set-ups in the house. So to have yet another separate system does add to the overall workload. To each his own, I guess. It's working for me and I have the safeguards via other set-ups/tanks.

i had a heater explode on me..it didnt cause any harm because my setup is properly done and fool proof from what i have experinced...i agree death or fire could result if not plugged into propper receptacles etc...never again will that happen because i refuse to use one and out here in the desert i dont need one...lol.. the frag tank and the display will be strictly sps hence the reason for wanting to tie them together...lots of work....:(
but on the other hand better seperate because a frag might take in one and rtn in the other..:(
arrrrrrr.... nothings easy in this hobby...

I was bored so I made a prop tank today...;)
What do you guys run for filtration??? I'm thinking just a skimmer no rock or sand...
Is this possible??? What do you guys use???

I'm in the process of building a frag tank right now, while it will sit next to my DT, it will be completely separate. more work yes, but also gives me piece of mind.
I intend to only run a skimmer (which showed up today) and LR/LS. It is only a 20L so should be pretty easy to maintain. It will be mainly SPS, but there will some acans as well.

I'll try and get some pics up, but my frag tanks a stand-alone 30 gallon (24x24x12~) with maybe ten-fifteen pounds of rock, three koralia 1's, a 2lf reactor full of carbon, an eheim 2213 with more carbon and some phosguard, a tunze surface skimmer (the one that comes with the 9002 in the reef kit, but note the skimmer's not used.) Also a majority of the tank is taken up by a 6 inch tall eggcrate rack, bellow which there's chaeto.
Three fish (mandarin dragonet, small scopas who's in the process of getting caught (outgrown), and a green coris for pest control.) Fish never get fed on purpose, but I do feed the Acan, blasto's, and larger zoa's/paly's and dendro's 3-5 times a week.
Tank has been up for about 8 months, has done a great job growing SPS's (acro's, echinatas, etc), LPS's (my Acan garden/growout, plus blastos), Zoas (Rastas, Jokers, CAR's, Nazanin's) etc. Only thing I haven't grown in it is chalices as it's lit by a suntek teklight 4 bulb t-5. Have issues with too much light on a few things as it is so haven't wanted to risk chalices in it.
So no skimmer and maybe a water change every 4-6 months. Had a 3/4 red planet frag get glued and has encrusted over its glueline by a few millimeteres in less than 2 weeks. Oh yea, and it's a bare bottom tank.

If I had the space and budget I'd have a much larger system (very envious of you guys with the big systems) but for now it's what I got and it's working great (besides that I keep running out of space, I'm a fragaholic :squigglemouth: )

If this is purely a frag tank for corals (not hooking up fish breeding or anything) I'd vote for rock over the skimmer. Unless you have a super high efficiency skimmer, you'll need some form of waste processing. Rock's going to do better than most any skimmer and will also keep the system much more stable.

I got a bk mini skimmer..;)
The frag tank is 60gal and the sump will be like 30 so the skimmer can handle jt...
I just want to keep this clean as possible and if it's bare bottom all the way around it will be simple.... I guess I can throw some rock in the sump if I have to....

did you decide to do a stand-alone tank? If so I'd vote several uhm...purple thumbs? towards dropping some rock down in the sump. Won't hurt anything but the wallet (which if you're running a bk you can't comment on the rock being the pricey part... (it's jealousy speaking here)) and will be of huge benefit (IMO/IME.) I'd say put some thought into how you're going to be setting the frags. The one thing I regret with my setup is it's incredibly tricky to get under the eggcrate to siphon off detritus, so even though i have a bare bottom I'm not getting maximum benefit from it. In your case maybe just provide some good flow down there and allow your overflow/skimmer to pull it out?
