Hey gang,
Starting my third reef aquarium and want it to be an aggressive community. It is a 65 gallon tank and I would like something compatible with a snowflake eel. I would love a smaller lionfish that will be friendly with the eel and reef safe. Anyone have experience with the fumanchu lionfish? Would this be a good choice? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks gang!

You should have no problem with the fu and snowflake, but the snowflake eel will out grow a 65g, and are known fish eaters.

Rule of thumb with feeding eels is if it is swimming around or active than feed it. They generally won't be very active unless they are hungry.

Feeding the lion will depend on the size it is when you get it. Smaller lions should be fed more often, usually once a day, than larger ones. Larger lions can go days with out eating. Also Fu manchus are notoriously hard to get feeding. if you don't have prior experience weaning fish off live foods I would suggest looking at fuzzy that is feeding on frozen at the LFS.

I used to feed my 10" russlles lion and my 36" zebra eel about once every 10 days or so.

Perfect! Thank you!

maybe checkout
some of the hamlets(indigo hamlet comes to mind) or an arc eye hawkfish they are like smaller groupers. I think they stay around the 5-6" range
Canthigaster sp. puffers (but not in the same tank as a lion) 4-5" range
maybe a damsel or two
not aggressive but maybe a small tomini or kole tang

Ok thank you Sir.

I would think twice about adding an eel to a reef, they could be pretty destructive. Also the flow in a reef could be a problem for a lion. Both will produce spikes in water chemistry because of the high protein feedings, so your filtration would have to upsized.... IMO

Do you have any other fish in the tank already?

I agree with welsher about thinking twice on adding an eel to a reef, they can be destructive and are messy eaters which will add to the bioload. You can manage the bioload whether it be with skimming, dosing, algae scrubber or reactor and water chages. A 65 is an adequate tank for a snowflake, but they can be one of the most active eels. Their activity will be rough on corals.

Dwarf lions are good choices for a reef, I personally feed my lions live food. You could have a fu and a fuzzy in a 65, as long as you understand their feeding requirements you'll be fine. Weaning to dead food isn't 100% guaranteed. As far as flow goes, my lions are in a reef and they are happy. They do like caves and perches to hang. I have 5 tanks and my lion reef is my favorite.

Thank you so much for the info. Maybe it would be wise to just go with 2 lions for now. I do have a media reactor but I am worried about the eels increased waste. Thank you!
