Garfs SPS cube

Lookin good mate!
Are you worried about the rust particles upsetting your tank etc?
Nah, it was contained within the plastic head casing. In any case it was only a little bit which I don’t believe would be detrimental. Granular Ferric Oxide is just rusty iron, right (not that I ever use any of that) :)

Turns out I hadn’t totally fixed the dosing pump as it failed again. Further examination discovered the santropene tubing was shot. Replaced it with food grade 4mm x 2mm silicone tubing and working like a good ‘un. Got 3 feet of it for £7 delivered.

Phosphate and nitrate are dropping, just with 1.5% daily water changes as only export, 0.1ppm phos, around 25 nitrate.

Started dosing tropic Marin A and K, yesterday, vinegar today, and turned my UV off today. What could possibly go wrong?

Decided to up my game with regard to phosphates this week. A light blue colour on Salifert always seemed ok to me. With regard to the little tests on aragonite (or calcite) adsorption of phos detailed here;

I decided to get the Hanna LR, and boy oh boy I was shocked at the values recorded in my tank. I started an ‘in tank” version of my test. In summary in my chosen current configuration in the small scale external test, calcite sand adsorbs phos over 3 days with effectiveness waning over the 3 days, with a direct correlation to saltwater phosphate concentration.

So, my tank test is thus;
A mesh bag containing 1.85 kgs of cheap calcite (presumably) sand (roughly washed in RODI) is placed on an egg rate shelf in the sump to allow gentle flow through. I flatten this bag to give more available direct surface area. This sand is being discarded every 3 days.

Day 0, 15 Jan. Not Tested (extrapolated @ 1.4 ish)
Day 1, Tested Hanna LR. 1.31ppm lol
2, “ 1.20
3, “ 1.20
Sand Change;
4, “ 1.12
5, “ 1.05

Stay tuned :)

Next 3 results are not so promising, batch of reagents changed;

6. Hanna LR. 1.14
7. “ 1.12
8. “ 1.11

Bag o’ sand changed.

Slow down again, but below 1ppm Phos, lol

9. Hanna LR. 1.00
10. “ 0.98
11. “ 0.97

Bag o’ sand changed

Hi Gary,

Are you saying that your acros look this good at 1ppm phosphate? Look at those colonies!

Hi Baruch, yeah they are growing well. Could they be growing faster at a lower PO4? Probably, maybe.
Only one way to find out. ;)

I like how you’re using Calcium carbonate as a phosphate adsorber. I’ve never seen that before! :D

I hope you’ve watched all Richard Ross’s stuff. Especially the “What’s up with phosphate” MACNA vid. He’s got some other stuff about being a lazy reefer, that I adore because he’s a clever version of me :)

Ya, I know.

He likes to challenge conventional wisdom, which is fine. There’s nothing wrong with high phosphates.

I have an opposing style of Richard. I like my things clean and aesthetically pleasing. I think my views align more with SunnyX.

However, I think I am open minded with other people’s tanks. :)

Ok, This will put you off me. I have a beautiful 4 inch yellow tang, a 5 inch blue eye kole, a 6 inch Fiji foxface, two clowns and a filefish in this little tank. Best of mates. This is not my first tank.

Gary, nothing you can say will be off-putting to me. :face-blowing-a-kiss:

Wife bought me a nice acro encrusted frag today, apparently she loves me :)
On another note, looks like my nitrate is 40 to 60 ish, lol.
