Here is a pic of the sump. On the right hand side is about 2.5g of top off water. Then we have a Ranco controller handling the heat, 75w Jager heater and a Tunze Kalk reactor fed by a Tunze Osmolator.
Then my secret formula! A lil dish full of various sponges. It was added before any other livestock was introduced.
The Ranco controller and Radion power supply are mounted under the cabinet. Since there isn’t much room in the tank. I needed to mount it where it was still accessible yet out of view.
Dang that's a nice little tank! What the deal with the sponges?

I wanted to solve the negative issues of starting with dry rock. The idea was to import the good things that quality live rock has (bacteria, sponge, and pods). Every longtime established tank has sponge growing. It is the one thing that reefers neglect to bring in when starting a tank with dry rock. The sponge is definitely growing so it is filtering the water.

Do you bring all this over from an established tank? or did you find somewhere selling sponges?!

Yes, my friend Steve Garrett (www.garretts-acropolis.com) has an outdoor system that has been set up and running for at least 15 years. We just went into his sump and about got clippings from about 4 different species of sponge down their he also collected a few pods for me too.

Went to Garrets and asked for the greg special on sponges, left with at least a dozen interesting ones. A couple money cowries too. I gotta say, I've seen that system online and in pictures/video dozens of time.. But in person -- seriously impressive.
This guy is a brute, and hand feeding him was pretty awesome

Only the orange one has split. It might be that I have been slacking off of feeding them. I was gung ho in the beginning but I rarely touch the tank. Been really busy with life and the family.So @gcarroll ... How those mushrooms comin' along?
