It is sweet though. And you do not find them often. You could try and wait til divers den drops the price but so aren't a lot of us.

To everyone criticizing the price of this, I suggest you take a hard look at your tanks. To the normal person, everything you have invested into your tank is a waste of money.

Why should this hobby be any different than any other hobby? In car collecting/restoring you have people that deal in low end customs and people who shell out 100's of thousands of dollars on top tier vehicles. And there are thousand other examples. This Gem tang is no different. Some of us (ME) can only afford the normal tank inhabitants. Others can afford whatever they want, and then some more.

It just irks me when someone criticizes another in this hobby when we are all practically doing the same thing. Some are able to do it at a higher level, some are not.

Speak it brother! That DD Gem Tang is 6.5" long, which is probably why it is $3K and not $3.6K. The smaller the more desireable and the higher the price. Nice fish, but you better have a big tank. I have a 4.5" Gem in a 465 gallon with 5 other tangs. Love mine.

My opinion is that a fish like this (think peppermint angel....) should be in the hands of breeders.

That's another reason I am not buying him. Sure I'd be very happy walking past it every morning but if breeders could breed them they would eventually be in the 500$ range and many more people could own them. The peppermint angel needs to be bred, it's a beautiful fish that stays small.

lol.... even if peppermints especially were breed we wouldn't even see $1000 (probably not even $5000) peppermints in either of our lifetimes and I don't care if your a 14yr old with perfect health, genes and living inside a protective bubble.... wouldn't happen lol.

As far as seeing a CB gem for $500.... good luck on that one too, incase you haven't noticed most CB fish are just as much or MORE then their wild versions

Anyways, wish I had the tank and extra coin for a gem, might not be the brightest, boldest looking fish but its certainly bad and would definitely still stand out in just about any tank IMO!

Peppermints will always be over 10,000$ and I see some gems going for 2000$ so 500 isn't that far off. The main reason they're so expensive is because there aren't many collectors where they are found, if we could have them breeding in the US that wouldn't be a bad guess on price

They will be that high as long as people are willing to pay it. Once they aren't willing to pay that, either the price will drop, or, if it costs more to collect them than the collectors can get for them, they won't keep trying to catch them for sale..
