Gfci for noob

Hasn't a scary moment today . Filling new 75 gallon and water splashed up and hit wall behind it . 5 mins later I smelled something burning cut power. The outlet had got wet and I think that's what,did it.

I emptied tank most of way and moved it and am installing a gfci outlet in the wall. Should this help prevent a.y issues like this? I was pretty worried about my house

Did you cut the power or did it trip on it’s own?

I went in a cut the breaker due to the smell. I am letting the plug dry out overnight with power off. Tomorrow am changing it to a gfi plug . Hopefully my lobe sand stays alive. Currently unheated with no circulation in 2 inches of water

when you get gfci buy one for outdoor use they stand up better then the indoor ones

also buy the right amperage rating match the rating of the breaker
