Gilroy 425g Build Thread (All Apex, all the time)

Oh I miss my Blotched Anthias. I like the idea of the camera setup on your skimmer, I need to use that idea during future updates to my system.

What's the wrasse that looks like a Halichoeres melanurus?

There are three wrasses in there: carpenters, katos, and melanarus.

I thought it looked like halichoeres melanurus but the bright yellow by the pectoral fins through me off since most of them that I have seen in the trade are more dull. Very nice looking melanurus!!

Cool videos!

Trust me, when there are lights, there will be a post. And there will very soon after be lots of coral. :D

I just got my melanarus a couple weeks back and I love that fish great coloration and very interactive. A great addition to my frag tank especially cool price point. Changed my outlook on wrasse now I want more lol

Once you go wrasse you never go back!!

I had a halichoeres bivattes ( slippery d*** wrasse),it was my first reef tank and came with the 55 I purchased. Most aggressive fish I ever had. Ate all his tank mates, tough lesson. Nonetheless not trying to hijack thread sorry! but nice melanarus!

I wouldn't ASSume an Apex lighting system yet. I would assume such a well connected person gets first dibs on prototypes and new products though.

I see you have two Ghost overflows and two drains with gate values. Do you have pics showing how you plumbed the two, inside the boxes and is it pretty quiet? I have the same setup
thanks in advance

I think some of the detail can be gleaned from the various photos and videos.

I do not have any drawings of how it actually ended up. Initial plans were close but there were some slight adjustments.

The first thing to understand is that my set up is entirely different than and not applicable to a sump-under-display design.

Inside the boxes: I only used two of the three bulkheads. I capped the third one. On one bulkhead I inserted a piece of PVC pipe approximately 3/8" lower than the top of the box. This is the emergency drain.

Below the box: the emergency drains were sized down to 1", brought to a tee and sent below the house.

The main drain for each was plumbed to a union gate valve and then into a 2" wye via a bushing. The 2" exit from the wye was sent below the house where it entered a clean out wye headed in the direction of the sump. The opposite direction on the clean out has 10 feet of pipe and then an elbow up toward the floor and 15" of pipe (to just under the floor). This pipe is for drawing in air for the drain. This is the key to silence.

Now, the tank is dead silent. Eerily so.

The negative part of the whole thing is tuning it (with the gate caves) so I get maximum water level in the overflow boxes (so no drain vortices) and also not going over the emergency standpipe is a major pain in the butt. Once done though, it will stay silent until the main pump is turned off and on. Then you either have to wait hours for it to reach self equilibrium or fiddle with it.

Where did you get your skimmer from? I'm asking because I have a Reef Octopus Elite 200INT that has the white dc pump and the red controller. I would like to get the new white octo controller for it so I can have some control from my Apex.

Thanks
