Gilroy 425g Build Thread (All Apex, all the time)

What was the Verdict on the ATM hot Salt. did you continue to use it or did you go to a traditional SALT ?
Still using it. Works great. Have done a few water changes with it. I have a ten boxes of it (ordered a dozen) in my FishCave so I think that says where I stand on it at this time. We will see how things go in the tank and also I will have some Triton tests done on some freshly mixed samples as well as my tank in a couple of months time.

Nice fish!

Beautiful tank so far... I really appreciate your attention to detail and patience for the hobby... I'm not too far away...I'm in Monterey we should link up sometime. .

I really am enjoying this build very informative and took in a whole lot from it. Nice job!

So the ReefBrite MH lights are really making a difference. Corals are happy. Encrusting is happening on the two acros I have in there. My Rainbow Trachy had bleached out with the temp LED I had on the tank but is now regaining its color. Coraline Algae is growing all along the back wall. All the other LPS are also loving life. Even without the LED XHO yet on the tank, the color and appearance on the tank with the 14K ReefBrite bulbs is spot on where I usually like it. A bit of LED will be icing on the cake.

I got word today that it will not be long before the XHO arrive and I can begin installing them. Stoked!

I have disconnected the 2-part dosing now that my Calcium Reactor is back online. For now the dKH seems to be VERY slowly rising and currently at around 8.5. Soon I am sure the demand will be higher and then I will be upping the the effluent dosing amount by adding the second DOS pump to the equation. This will give me 2/3 duty cycle instead of 1/3 which means I can get UP TO about 160ml/min - that combined with dropping my pH set point about .05 should give me all the CaCO3 I will need for a while until the tank grows in.

Fish are still in QT for at least another week or two. So hard to be patient. They are all eating well and I change out 25% of the QT water every two or three days using water from the DT and then replace the DT water with fresh mixed. I have not medicated at all since I have been observing them very closely almost every single day since they have come in. There are many approaches to QT but for these sensitive fish I chose this way. If I was doing a QT on tangs, I would most certainly be treating them prophylactically.

Stay tuned to this thread - there are plenty of updates coming - especially with the next group of new lights.

How many fish you have awaiting their new home?

- Flame Wrasse - Big Male
- Flame Wrasse - Female
- Tono's Fairy Wrasse - Male
- Yasa Hashe Goby

First of all let me just say what an awesome build. I am very interested in the lighting solution you picked. I just ordered my 1st apex and now I'm thinking I will change my lighting scheme. How easy do you think it will be for me as an apex rookie to program the mh lights?

These pieces will be coming soon in the next step of the process.

Let me guess...you got your dream tank and your wife gets her dream kitchen?

Nancy did pick out this granite/stone - but not for a kitchen!

Next week the beer-ledge and integrated cocktail table of my tank get this on top of them. It is going to look awesome.

After that (and the last LED lights), its just the wood trim finish (bottom stand and top canopies) that is left to do. It's been a long road but I am finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel as far as the build is concerned and now it will be more about livestock and operation!

Slowly I have been adding a lot of LPS corals over the last few months - more so in the last few weeks. Friday I even brought home one of the gorgeous Plutonium Acans I have had for nearly four years now. This is a pic from the LPS side. Next week I hope to get some sticks (from Utah friends) for the bommie on the other side - aka SPS Island.

I did a little bit of work in the FishCave today. Since my Calcium Reactor was half-full of media, I figured it was time to clean it out and refill it. While I was doing it, I also thought I would repurpose a NextReef media reactor into a 2nd stage for the calcium reactor. I filled the second stage with some Two Little Fishies ReBorn I had stored away from my prior tank. Now I will get a tiny bit more action in the effluent and raise the pH a little bit too before it hits the sump.

It is a custom cable supplied by ReefBrite. It has a RJ45 on one side and their custom connector on the other that mates up with a pigtail that comes out of the ballast.

Terence. I've got Reefbrites with controller/dimmer coming tomorrow, plan on using the Apex to control them/the Varspd port, I"m guessing you will do the same? Will programming the RB be the same as the Kessils but without the color control? Also once you set up yours , would you mind sharing your programming for the RB
Thanks
