Most definitely...just enough to cover the bottom of the pvc (2" or so). I'll probably end up using larger grains of sand, otherwise with the amount of pumps I'll have in there it'll be a sand storm.

Gen finished my drip tray. I originally was going to use filter socks, but I saw Dan Riggle's tank that used a drip tray w/filter floss. I glued ribs w/Weldon 16 and taped them w/blue painters tape. Next, I need to drill out some holes for water flow.

Gen also made me 2 wetboxes. These will be attached via suction cups and hidden in the rockwork. I plan on using 2 Tunze 6205's in each box pointing through the canyon and especially in dead spots. There are removable lids to access the pumps for cleaning and keep critters out.
 
Those wetboxes came out great. I may need to talk to Gen about that.
Which way do the tunzes face inside though?
Any pictures of the inside?

The tunzes magnets go inside with the propeller on the outside. You can put them pretty much wherever you like within the rockwork. It's kinda hard to take a clear shot of the inside of the box, but i'll try.
 
You a pro drilling those holes after you did them for your frag racks. That bit cuts like butter. Thanks again dude! I still gotta stop by and check out your LFS. :D

If the powerhead is on the outside of the box, what is the box with holes for?
Is it just for holding the magnet/powerhead stable?

My thought was to put a powerhead inside a box, at a right angle, with a small deflector,
so it was fairly thin against the wall, and had a wider gentler output. Maybe that is completely different.

Correct on the first part, but I guess you could do it your way (can't hurt to experiment). ;)

I got a chance to finish hooking up the skimmer. The skimmer is fed directly from one of the drains and dialed in via a 1" ball valve.

I also got to work on the standpipes on the right overflow box. I'm doing a Herbie standpipe method, which simply is one standpipe will be the main drain and the other acts as a backup/emergency drain. The main drain is about 8" below the water line and the secondary drain is about a 1/4" below the waterline. You might notice couplings on both standpipes, it's similiar to a skimmer standpipe and will allow me to adjust the standpipe 1 3/8" up or down. The standpipes will be controlled by ballvalves to dial them in and eliminate the dreaded "gurgling sound."
