We are wanting to get a protein skimmer for our 150gal tank. Preferably one that goes off the back.

Assuming what you meant by “goes off in the back” equates to a hang on back. Reef Octopus makes a great HOB skimmer.

Hello,

This is a hard question since tour tank is not plumbed for a sump. Honestly I would do a eshopps s300 in a 40 breeder and then put a dc pump in it pipe water to it from behind your tank but over the top similar to your canister filter. It would be easy if its in the open and if it’s underneath in the stand maybe slide a 20 in there or what ever fits then find a skimmer foot plate that fits and do the same type of piping as your canister filter. However I would not use the flex hose if it’s super long, probably do normal piping with valves. Hard to imagjne with out slides lol aka pictures.

No, but we have a fx6 filter.

Well dang that does make it harder, if it was me I would look into setting up a sump. But I can't help much with the HOB skimmers I havent used to many. Good with the filter though. Sorry I couldn't help. If I could I would. If there is anything feel free to message any time.

I’m running a 47gal and with a canister filter and no sump but I’m in the process of plumbing in a sump as it makes life so much easier.

you can run your skimmer, heaters, reactors and all sorts in a sump that is out of sight.

to me a sump is worth the effort but my tank was not drilled for a sump but I have designed a system that will shut of my overflow and pump if the sump level gets to high or low for various reasons.

I would recommend setting up sump in some way it’s a good investment

Well said

The problem I see is with a 150 gallon tank the skimmer will have to be rated for that size tank with a heavy bio load. The problem is HOB skimmers have a small cup it will have to be cleaned daily. It will become a chore real quick and after a few months you will be sick of cleaning it every day.

Very very true, with HOB and that large if a tank might need 2 of them.

Agreed

I also agree that a HOB skimmer for a tank that size would be require a lot more frequent cleanings and I personally would not recommend it, but the skimmer does not have to be a HOB one just because you do not have a sump. You can get a HOB overflow and plumb it to an external skimmer that is properly sized for your tank. If all you have is an FX6 then you most likely have enough room in your stand for a large skimmer. I would go that route if you do not want to get a sump.

If you absolutely most do a HOB, Reef Octopus makes one rated for 200 gallons, but BRS rates it at 175 for a light bio-load, 100 for a medium bio-load and 75 for a heavy bio-load. If you have a heavy bio-load maybe two would be in order. Here is the link...

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree sump all the way. Start with pump and chaeto with fuge light and save up for a good protein skimmer. As long as you keep a light bioload for a while cheato will cover it. Ive done the hob skimmers and they all suck not that they dont work but they take a lot of work not to mention risk of overflows.

My husband researched some different ones and ended up ordering one and a uv light filter.

I'd tried to tell him everyone recommended a sump first. He says the canister filter works like one and should be fine for now‍.:D lol
