That skimmer is waaayyyy too small. You need a skimmer that has a heavy bioload rating for a 150 gallon tank. That one is rated for a tank 1/3 the size of your tank. You need a sump and an in sump skimmer. That little skimmer will be a pain in the butt imo. Just get a sump and a skimmer. It makes life easier. I recommend the reef octopus regal 150ss

And the collection cup is ultra small.. Lots of cleaning, and I couldn't even get my fingers in there.

I don't know if it matters that its undersized for the tank though. I run my skimmer super dry to keep the nutrients up, a smaller skimmer might not be a terrible thing other than the constant cleaning.

Well....how's your tank running now? If you're doing maintenance right on the canister, and it's looking good then you're just wanting the skimmer for additional nutrient removal or perhaps extend the time between canister cleanings.

That's different from removing the canister (which since you haven't mentioned I assume is not planned).

In that case, any of the above HOB are fine even if not fully rated for your tank.

It's running fine right now. We just started it last Thursday though.
 
BTW - as a freshwater guy as well...beast of a canister you have there. I'd have a hard time spending money on that and then deciding to go another route too soon. There's also in-tank skimmers that look pretty good AND can be moved to sump as an option in the future. The Tunze 9012DC comes to mind. Beast of an in tank skimmer and can be moved to sump (plan on higher water level sump) in the future. And it's not unattractive.

Not to continue what you have already been told and be unhelpful, just my experiences. I started my first tank a little over a year ago without a sump, and now I regret it everyday. Not having it is limiting and makes life more difficult haha.

That's what my husband says about the filter too. Lol Good to know about the skimmer/sump and I'll have him look into it.
 
I run a fx4. You'll be fine running a canister as long as you keep up on the cleaning of the canister.

I don't have any sps. Leathers and softies. I just got back into lps. I lost all lps in a dino outbreak.

I don't think he's completely opposed to it. He just feels the filter does fine for now. I believe we will be adding one soon after he researches more. Lol we have plenty of room under our tank and most likely once we learn more we will add a refugium too. Just for now baby steps.

To be honest, with a skimmer like that and the right bio-load you won't ever need a sump. Lots of European tanks do without just fine (hence the Tunze intank line). Don't spread that around though...they may kick me off the site. :)

There are very few of us that use a canister or openly admit it.
