Ill keep it short. My learning experiences are way to painful to relive.
1) don't turn your ac off to go camping In the summer.
2) have a generator ready for power outages
3)seal your pvc plumbing
4)don't let wife feed tank whenever she wants
5) research well all inhabitants. Never listen to the guy who wants you to buy them
6) don't buy cheap equipment. If you can't afford a refractometer, decent skimmer, or good heater dont bother.
7) one aptasia or bubble algae becomes a million very quickly. Stay on it!

Deciding to clean the sand bed on a 16 Nuvo that was running fantastically well and required almost no maintenance. Big Nem with clown and hundreds of Zoas. Returned later to a stinking tank full of dead corals dying Nem and dead clown. Either always vacuum your sand bed or never!

My horror story is: 2015
Year two of my 180.
June found AEFW
August finished up the Bayer dipping of acros to kill off AEFW.
September tank started slowly going downhill, parameters tested fine and steady.
October tank crash, lost most of my SPS, most of my prized LPS. Mysterious fish deaths.
November tank tear down, sell and downsize.

I've heard they take over the whole tank like a weed. Sucks cuz I do like the way they move

Sorry to here that. I think I'm most worried about the mystery crash factor then anything. How can stop something from happening if there's no apparent reason why.

20 years ago, I set up a Lifegard filter system. The directions said to glue the different components together.... so I did. I set it all up, it hummed beautiful and I was so proud. Then all the components came flying apart, draining my tank into my 3rd floor apartment. It seems gluing together meant PVC glue, not tank silicone. O.O
So happy the days of no information are gone. I have no idea how we figured out what to do.
Here's a newer version of the filter. It wasn't threaded back then.

44 gallons. I remember it like it was yesterday. I can still hear the hum of it all starting up.... and the 5 minutes I stood there not moving with my mouth gaping open.

Changes I'll make on my next tank:
1. Don't use live rock
2. Qt every coral/use peroxide on coral
3. Leave more space for corals to grow
4. If any kind of algae does appear jump on it asap

Lets see. Maxijet blowing up in my tank and killings everything but 1 called clownfish. Heater cracking during a waterchange and electrocute d myself, my heater got stuck on one time and killed my cuc and shrimps. Acrylic joint leaks on a 170 gallon custom witch im not mentioning any names but for the money very disappointing on the manufacture. Ran out if racing fuel for a week so decided that i would stop the carbon dosing all together to come home to a complete tank crash so i had to basically start over again for hurricane sandy to take my whole system a year later. Yea i want to puke on all the money i spent but look im back lol
