GK - 29 Gallon Build Thread

Well I've made some progress but the only progress is painting and finishing the stand. While I like doing wood work, I hate finishing it with paint and sand...so tedious. Will post more pics when I get some noticeable progress. This whole job thing really gets in the way of my reef hobby.

Wow great build so far. Are you from FL? I would think 4 fish would be your but you'll have to keep up on water changes. I've got a 30g cube and have a pair of clowns, Lubbock wrasse, and now a baby tomini tang. I had a flame angel but all my sps polyps weren't extending so I traded him for the tang.

Thanks. Yes I am from FL, you too?

What size of a sump do you run?

Some updated pics:

Applying the silicon to the corner overflows from melevs reef.

Got my sock holder from zlazer. This is my own design, they just laser cut the acrylic.

Painted inside of canopy and mounted it. Outside is ready for staining. Also got the oak vents for the fans in.

Great update. I'm over in Cocoa(32927). I've got a custom acrylic the original owner build for the tank. I've got a semi-build thread. Haven't updated it in awhile which I need to here soon. Maybe able to help ya out with clowns when the time comes. And of course your not to far away.

The hood is trimmed and has its first coat of stainable primer.

Sump is installed and 80% plumbed. Just need to get the correct mounting clips and cement it together.

Also threw on my 65K wave point fudge light. I really like their LED lights. I'd use them on my main display if they were Apex compatible.

Question about true union ball valves. I was doing the plumbing and went to tighten the two sides of the ball valves. I hand tightened them as far as I could. I then tried a wrench to get them a little tighter, but they wouldn't budge. How do you guys do them? Do you just hand tighten or do you actually put thread tape on the threads (seems pointless)?

For some reason I can't post a picture, anyone else having this problem?

Got the stand stained. Just a few last tweaks and I'll finally be adding water.

Need to redo some plumbing and build the doors. Here's the most up to date pic:

I wanted it to look like somewhat of a piece of furniture as opposed to a tank just sitting there which is why I have a hood. It also doubles as a wine holder. It's more of an open top though because the top of the canopy is pretty open.

Been a while since I have posted anything. Here are the reefbrite 30" xho mounted. One is 50/50 the other is all blue. I also mounted the apex moonlights in the middle. The last picture you can see my small webcam. You can also see the canopy fans I used. They are IP55 so hopefully they can hold up to the moisture.

I wish everything was wireless. It's such a mess once all of the cords and wires get in there.

Still looks great even with all the wires, following along!!
