Golden angle not eating

I recently bought a golden dwarf angle and am having trouble getting him to eat, today I tried live brine shrimp but so far have not seen him go for them. He looks and acts very healthy watching me and even trying to intimidate me sometimes not sure what else I can do, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

These guys are notorious for not eating, my opinion it's likely internal parasites. Is he in a qt tank, I would not wait or hesitate to start an internal parasite treatment regime. My method is prazi pro dosed into the tank, this sometimes alleviates the load of parasites enough for the fish to start eating. I usually do 2 rounds of pp. When he starts eating I mix seachem metro/focus into food and feed laced food for 10 days or so. The combination of these 2 drugs address a broad spectrum of parasites and worms. API general cure contains both of these drugs, I don't have direct experience dosing this into the tank for a fish not eating, many use this drug mixed in food.

You really do have to act quickly, whatever you do, once you see the white stringy poo or pinched stomach, it will likely be too late.

Yes he’s in qt, I haven’t noticed the stringy poo, and he looks fat and happy, he shows no other signs of a problem. I will try the prazi can’t hurt at this point, thanks I will keep you updated.

Live blackworms or live brine will often get them started feeding in captivity. Good luck. I notice with reclusive fish such as golden dwarf angels adding food and backing away slowly helps. Sometimes they sneak food when we aren’t within “line of sight”. New blueface angels are notorious for this as well.

It may have internal parasites, or it may not. Unlikely to have much to do with it eating or not eating. Golden is a very reclusive fish that is easily stressed and will refuse to eat as it acclimates. Make sure it has plenty of hiding spots and offer variety. Something may trigger eating ..... or it may not.

Hmm, not sure I have ever seen live blackworms for sale near me at lfs, can try the internet. Yes he has hiding places in qt put some old cycled rock in there with him, was also thinking of adding an open swimmer tank mate so he would see it swim and eat without harm, any suggestions on what type, something small he wouldn’t be to afraid of, Damsel maybe.

My lfs guy told me he doesn’t have them because they can carry tuberculosis, that seems a bit weird, but has anyone else ever heard of that?

Never heard that, one large lfs here does a huge business with black worms for like 30 years, they are a big food item for the fresh water guys, I think the cichlid guys.

Yeah I think there a little off, added the prazi today, he still acts normal, I think he is sneaking the live brine when I’m not in there trying to watch, bought him last Sunday the lfs got him in on Thursday before that so if he wasn’t eating something I think I would be seeing evidence of some sort. I am going to order some blackworms and try that as well.

He’s in a qt with just small bulb over it and not even pointing down at him, I did read that they come from deeper water so I purposely left it somewhat dark.

Check out the pp website, you will find individual preferences all over ghe the place. I usually do a 25% water change after 5 days and dose again. The water change helps with water quality, if fhere is anything dying that effects the water qhaluty as well.

Although the golden angel does have a difficult adjusting to esting in a captive environment, donf under estimate the likelyhood of zomething internal.

Feeding live like brine shrimp, black worms. and pods help. Even putting a mature rock with algae and pods help, thsse guys arent used to feeding in the water column. Something to consider may also be a couple of dither fish to feed from the water column,Ive seen a couple of mollies work for this purpose. Fish like this sometimes xo best to traer for internal concerns and quickly move them to a mature tank with grazing opportunities and other fish to show him how to feed.

Make sure you have plenty of hiding places. And enough circulation to bring the food to him, they don't like feeding in the open.

Yes I did notice that today, you are correct he mostly waits under his rocks and will dart out to grab a live brine, I’m just glad he is eating now, I’m wondering if I should put in a dither fish or if that will make him hide more.
