Good beginner SPS?

This thread couldn't have popped up at a better time . . .

The SPS in my tank seem to be doing moderately well - decent polyp extension on my millie? colony, spongodes and setosa, and the slimer-like frag that's been almost black for a year is now neon green like it was when I bought it. (I'd like to see more color and extension in my Montipora "Mystic Sunset", though...) Birdsnests and a cute but nameless Stylophora seem to be doing well, too. (Acans that I tried, for unknown reasons, melted within days. (T_T) )

On top of that, the CTARS "Fragtoberfest" event is coming up, and I've put in for the day off, so . . . compiling a list from this thread!

So I've been browsing a bit on these strains. Any suggestions on vendors for these at a decent price but quality product? I don't want anything inferior.
Great guy to deal with and reasonable prices I would give boom corals a shot.
This says it all. I purchased from Boom and after 3 days i lost a coral but let it go because most vendors will only guarantee live delivery and 24 hours later when the corals dead they tell you to pound sand. Boom called me to just check up on things and when i informed him of the loss he sent me a new one no problems and he has the largest and reasonably priced corals available

+1 as to what was mentioned before: if you want something specific and you want it now and you're willing to pay the price; your LFS or, primarily, online retailers are the way to go.

If you are patient and can wait for a piece to come around then local clubs and fellow reefers are the more cost effective route to take.

Online retailers, IME, are far more diverse than your typical brick and mortar shop (LFS). There are exceptions to the rule, but most run of the mill LFS's simply don't have the means to stock every coral under the sun in their store. Trying to accommodate everyones needs is unrealistic and in most cases just not practical. This is also relevant to husbandry and skill set. I've been in some LFS's that had the know how to keep a wide array of very nice coral and some that simply did not...

Online retailers have limitations as well, but most are becoming very competitive in shipping rates and many more reefers are getting in on group buys. Some online retailers likely have less over head and in turn can stock a broader selection; not to mention they touch a larger, wider, variety of customer with an online presence which opens up their market and in turn their selections tend to be broader.

In regards to cost, IME this is absolutely relative to your location/area, as it relates to local trading or LFS's. If your area has a high volume of coral A, naturally the cost will go down as coral A is highly abundant. Conversely, coral A might be two or three times as expensive a few hours up the road. Naturally, prices vary far less for online retailers in regards to location. The only price varying I see from online retailer A and B is directly related to "name brand" corals or site reputation. A place like battle corals, WWC, Unique Corals, etc are "higher end" comparatively to something like aquarium depot, live aquaria, etc. That being said, you also get what you pay for. Unknown Acro A: $7 VS Super Duper Fairy Unicorn Princess Acro: (1) Arm.

This is a fantastic point, and well made. I chuckled at the cost of 1 arm. :p

Great!!! I love all the info here.
I currently run 36" T5 HO and 48" LED over my tank . Tank is 48" long and 24" deep so it has to be an SPS that will be happy with this lighting combo. They will be placed close to the top so it shouldn't be an issue. Not sure if this changes any suggestions tho?

A lot of good info here. I wish there was a chart or something for this that someone has put together. You know, here's the newb stuff. for each type. Where it goes, lighting , flow something like that. Live Aquaria is similar, but not quite what I'm looking for.
