I would like to try to get into keeping SPS. I have been unsuccessful in the past and I think that had to do with way too much light and poor acclimation to the light on my part. What would be a good coral to get started?

I have Maxspect Mazarra P-series LED's on a 55 gallon tank.

Current Corals:
GSP
Torch
Frogspawn
assorted zoas (armor of god, fruit loops, eagle eye, pink hippos, and others)
corn bread 3g chalice
xenia
anthellia
mushrooms
rics
duncan
sun polyps
psycho war coral
elegance

I started with birdnests, hardy and grew fast for me. Then some of the more common acros like Bali Green Slimer and Stags. Good my place to start IMO.

The good ole tried and true green slimmer is a great place to start. I like bird nests too because they grow really fast and don't need a ton of light but they are also the first to die on me if something is off.

Same here. Birdsnests and montiporas are the first to go if something is out of whack in my tank.

I think any of the "tried and true" classic aquacultured acroporas like most of the ORAs and some others

+1 to this. True aquaculture is the key for "hardy beginner" type acros. If you want other SPS, monti caps are great.

Thanks for the great advice!!!! I think my tank, well actually me, is ready to try SPS again. I am going to be placing an order for some ORA frags. I just got some unexpected money that is going right to the tank fund. ;)

Montipora digitata
Montipora capricornis

Acropora yongei
Acropora valida

Hydnophora excessa

Stylophora pistillata

Seriatapora hystrix

Pocillopora damicornis

These are all very easy SPS, lower light demanding than a lot of SPS, and less sensitive to temperature/parameter swings, with one caveat...Pocillopora is notorious for Polyp Bailout, with temperature swings. 6 months later you'll have Pocillopora growing in various areas of your tank since the polyps are heavy and not usually skimmed out.

Yes they are! I have green growing pocillipora EVERYWHERE :mad2:

Might I recommend ORA Pearlberry, Red Planet, and if you can find it, Oregon Tort. Three of the most gorgeous acros IMO, and very hardy.

a good sps....
green slimer, any kind of birdsnest and orange/green/purple caps

i am new too and i have those up top of my tank and grows great even under par38s

Ughh....I can't make up my mind. I am going to just put all names of the corals I am considering into a hat and pick them that way.

Scripps Acro is a great starter SPS.
