Good problem solver aquarium service in Massachusetts area

Hi everyone, can you help suggest an aquarium service in the Massachusetts area that someone has had experience with someone who is great at problem solving. My tank has been up for two years now and recently I’ve had what looked like diatoms all over the sand and rocks. I had my LFS come by and he thought if I just mix the sand up a bit it should help but that hasn’t done anything. When I do a water change it comes back much worse immediately. I’m hoping to find a service to come by and tell me what this stuff is and help me rid of it. If it was diatoms I’m guessing they’d be gone by now but it’s been a few months and they’re not letting up. I don’t think it is cyano but at this point I’m not ruling anything out. It’s not slimy but almost a dusty like covering on the sand but it appears slimy to a degree on the back glass and somewhat hairy on the rocks. The color is a brown/red covering. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Here are some pictures. I just mixed the sand so it’s not as bad as was a bit earlier. The rock is covered as you can see.

I’ve got an algae reactor running which keeps most algae controlled. The stuff on the rocks looks like algae but it’s brown and very small
 
Let’s see if any pros can suggest someone or an action to take you mention it gets worse after a water change. What kinda water you using store bought premix Rodi at home?
If your making your own water do you know the TDS numbers in and out?

No worries looks and sounds like diatom bloom on sand others will chime in with better questions.
 
Agree it looks like diatoms on the sand bed. I too am curious on your water source.
 
The stuff on the rocks looks like what I've heard others coll 'turf algae'.

I'd suggest that your nitrate and phosphate levels are low because they are being taken up by the algae. Do you have a sump? A refugium? An algae scrubber?
 
Yes. I’ve got a sump with a skimmer and an algae reactor growing algae. I empty the reactor when it’s gets 75-80% full
 
What’s your clean up crew besides that snail?
 
There are at least 5-6 hermits and a fire shrimp and a diamond goby
Interesting, how big is the tank? What snails do you have? Some nassarius snails will fix your sand bed in a few days, not worried about that. Your rocks confuse me, since you have a lot of hermits. Do they eat that algae that’s growing?
 
Tank is 90 gallons with 2 nassarius snails. I’ve put in many more snails but a lot of them are dead. I’m thinking because whatever is in the tank is killing them or they don’t have enough to eat.
 
I think you have two “problems”. The "algae" in the sand and the growth on the rocks. However – the solution of each problem is probably opposite each other. I´m not sure off the stuff in the sand, cyano,dino or diatoms but when I got stuff like that – it has normal been in low nutrient environment (low in PO4 or/and NO3) in aquariums with low biological diversity. The way I have gone here have been to rise the biodiversity (even the microbial diversity) and rise nutrient into readable figures (PO4 around 0.04 -0.08 and NO3 around 2 – 4 ppm) if my “sand stirrers” not done their job – I usually help them once a day with a stick, stirring the sand.

The classic way to handle the growth on the stones is to limit the nutrients in the aquarium – a strategy that´s just the opposite the strategy above.

This is a dilemma and I think you will have to think outside the box. The first problem is – IMO – the most difficult to handle in more than one way (dino and cyanobacteria have very few natural grazers) – I would slowly rise the inorganic nutrient level in the water column and try to rise the biodiversity in the sand

If you can read figures – you know that´s no lack of nutrients.

How to solve the expected microalgae growth on your stones? The answer of that is to rise the amount/diversity of your CUC. As I can see on the pictures you have few (or no) corals that can compete with the algae. With that type of algae that I can see on your rocks – I think that hermits and urchins is the best type of CUC but even some snails will help. IMO – in a tank of your size and no/few corals in the DT – at least 30 hermits and snail and a couple of diadema spp urchins will do a good job. Try to take as many species of hermits and snails as possible – because different species have different food preference. The urchins will eat some of your coralline algae too but in the beginning – they are useful tools in order to eat up the algae you have problems with at the moment. When they have done their job – just take the out from the display and start to grow corallines on the microalgae free areas.

What I´m tying to say is that you should identify the most important problem at the moment – defeat that and at the same time try to prevent new problems from arising. Take it slowly and methodically

With rocks looking the way your rocks look – no problems with food for hermits and urchins – when they have graze on the present algae fauna – new algae will arise – small green algae that will be food for algae eating snails

Because you have had problems with surviving rate of snails – you can wait some time with them (until hermits and urchins have done their work). However newly imported snails can have low surviving rate

Are you still getting zero tds on the output?
 
TDS meter broke. I do keep up with the replacements for the Resin and the other filters. I believe it’s at 0 but don’t know for sure.
