Sorry but I'm a ramble for a second. These last ten days have been a lot to bear for me in this hobby. I've read a lot picked a bunch of people's brains and more importantly I have learned a lot. I saved my Kole tang with the help from this community this R2R community which I must add that the people behind this site really make u feel at home and part of their family. There truly is no other site like this out there on the interweb like this. These people to name a few but not all have been extremely helpful to me with my problems I have ran into with my tank and deserve a shot out @melypr1985 @Humblefish @twilliard @domination2580 . So with all there help that they have given me I have decided to see if I can help people out with the dreaded hair algea using my tank as an experiment for everyone to see.
Quick back story as to why my tank looks like this

Instead of this

Ten days ago my Kole tang was acting funny so I grabbed him out of the display tank and figured a cure for him and since then have removed all my fish into a qt tank. The day that my Kole got sick I was talking to twillard because some GHA was imported on a frag (the same frag I beleive that got my fish sick) and starting to rear its angry head.
image.jpeg
With all my attention on my fish and not the display tank I completely forgot about the GHA. Plus I work mid shift so when I got home the lights were out and I didn't really pay any attention to the DT. Then my weekend came and holy Donald Trumps hair in seven days it looked like this.

No but seriously the resemblance is uncanny.

Now for all those people who say just don't feed ur tank it will go away and all that other Bologna it's a lie. After I removed my fish I did about a 50 gallon water change for the Qt tanks. My nitrates were only at 15 when this all started ten days ago. And I am running a phosban reactor as well. So the tank was fed nothing the nitrites were lower then 15 and I only run my lights for 8 hours a day as it was and instead of all three going I only had a ReefBrite tech 50-50 lighting it. I have since removed all my corals from the display tank and are next to my qt fish in a Rubbermaid container. My Kitchen table looks like this. Future wife is ok with it for now. Need to make her my wife soon for the tornado I have unleashed upon our house to save our fish and corals with her only response being I think we need a bigger Qt tank.

So with talking to twillard behind the scenes we have decided to nuke my display tank with H2O2. 5 mg for every ten gallons twice a day. On this thread I will upload pictures everyday to show how everything is going with my treatment. I'm hopeing with this experiment it will hel at least someone with GHA who is loseing the battle. I understand ur pain brothers and sisters with this unwanted algea. I also hope I can help show the people out there who are haters of H2O2 for some reason or another that it does work and is something like $2.29. Those haters love spending money on stuff that peroxide can do the same if not better job on but won't admit that peroxide will work because of change. Well I'm not rich and $2.29 to cure GHA seems like the right price for me. So today I dumped 50 ml of H2O2 into my overflow box or as twillard put it Ita time H2O2 time.
I am excited to see how long it will take for the GHA to be gone. I mean I have 66 more days for the tank to be fallow mine as well have some fun with it. So please follow my experiment and if any of you guys have used peroxide for GHA chime in on let's make this a fun old thread. And sorry for the length but I think I have said everything I wanted to. I hope my tank looks like this again soon and so does the future wife

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Justin,
Thanks for the wonderful shout out. I hope the best for you in this experiment. I have tried h202 before and I would squirt in as much as one good squeeze could go in and never had luck. But I also had nitrates and phosphates. Could have been fighting a losing battle. I can't wait to see how this method will help you out and what we can all accomplish.

Hit it HARD my friend :)

"need a bigger qt" Sounds like you found a keeper!

Do you have any shrimp in the tank? Just interested to see how they handle the dose..

Did you ever figure out the cause of the algae? A tiny bit on a frag shouldn't cause an explosive outbreak in 10 days. My dad had one of my tanks for awhile. It had a serious green hair algae problem. He dosed H2O2 for a month and it vanished. Now, the original cause was my mom overfeeding the two fish, but months after I took the fish back the algae hadn't left. I can't wait to see your results.

My dad dosed hydrogen peroxide and there was a shrimp in the tank.

Yes I have one skunk cleaner shrimp in there couldn't get him or her out. And knowing that that's why I am dumping it into the overflow box hopefully by the time it gets pumped back up its watered down enough to not do any damage to the shrimp. Plus I have a ton of pods like literally a ton of pods i took them out and I weighed them and all just to put them back in. So I wanna see if they still mutiply with H2O2.

With talking to twillard and feel free to chime in if I'm wrong twillard but it was introduced on a frag and nitrates at 15 is enough to make it grow and then me forgetting about it for a week it prolly has soaked up all the nitrates in the tank I'm prolly at zero if I checked right now. Just honesty don't care to check as I don't really want to do anything about them as I'm not touching anything in the tank while I'm doing this experiment. No water changes nothing I want to see what H2O2 can do by itself.

Yup. I'll follow along here. I'm currently using peroxide to treat cyano in my tank. I've been dosing 1ml per gallon and it does wonders same day. I'm slowly beating it back, but I anticipate a long battle with it especially since I'm not the best at keeping up with my water changes. I believe if I can keep up with the dosing and water changes, then I'll beat the dreaded red slime!

By the way, your pretty darn funny. You had me laughing like a loon at the donald reference! My husband and son were both looking at me like I had a serious mental deficiency :)

Thanks for the compliment. But it looks like him it really does and that's why we now call it now the Trump rock. It's hairy, ugly, in the way,and we really want nothing to do with it.

Do you have any anemones or corals in the tank? If so, what kinds, and do they seem ok with it? My dad did it this treatment, but he only had mushrooms and blue star polyps.

No anemones, I never have luck with them. I do have tons LPS, zoas, mushrooms, palys, toadstool and a couple sps. Some things look ticked off for a while after, but they bounce back after a couple hours. By then the cyano has receded back by 75% as well. It keeps coming back but not as fast, as long as I remember to keep dosing (which I forgot to do yesterday).

Gotta get a system down I spoon with the bottle of H2O2 every night so when I wake up its already in my hands.

LOL. Now that's an idea! Hard to forget that way, but I think I'll just set a daily reminder in my phone. Now to set a reminder to remind me to set the reminder.

Think Acans could handle it then?

Yes they close for a little bit but re open @twilliard has a whole bunch of threads about peroxide. And its effects at low dosage. That's where I got this idea from I picked his brain for a bit which is a very smart brain we came up with this idea and now we're nuking my tank
