Green Hair Algea Experiment

Yup. I'll follow along here. I'm currently using peroxide to treat cyano in my tank. I've been dosing 1ml per gallon and it does wonders same day. I'm slowly beating it back, but I anticipate a long battle with it especially since I'm not the best at keeping up with my water changes. I believe if I can keep up with the dosing and water changes, then I'll beat the dreaded red slime!

By the way, your pretty darn funny. You had me laughing like a loon at the donald reference! My husband and son were both looking at me like I had a serious mental deficiency :)
I had a cyno problem in my 56 tall for 8 years, tore it down to move it replaced all the live rock and live sand, cyno started coming back after 2 months. Purchased a Maxspect Gyre 130 circulation pump put it in the 56 gal at 3/4 power pulsing and after 3 days the cyno started regressing to none at all. Seems my cobalt and Aqueon power heads left too many dead spots on the sand. The Gyre did what Boyd's Chemi Clear could not!

As far as Hair Algae had that too when I initially set up of my 56 gal due to phosphates. A lawnmower blenny put a dent in it but couldn't control it. I dis some research and purchased a Sailfin Tang thought he was going to explode after eating so much hair algae but after a week there was no GHA any where. Haven't been any since I started using a Ro/Di filter for salt mixes. Originally I bought commercial mixed saltwater. Thinking that's where the phosphates came from.

I actually just put in an MP40 a couple days ago. I think it's helping quite a bit as well as the peroxide.

Yea well I am moving about 4500 gallons an hour. 2 3/4 sea swirls on a closed loop powered by a vectra M1. A little giant 4mdq return pump. And I have a koralla or whatever it is 1450. And the hair just sways in the wind. So I don't know. I am using a 4 stage Rodi that has a TDS of 1 right now. Peroxide is working in my opinion.

image.jpeg Just dosed some H2O2 looks like it's attaching to the algea. @twilliard is this from the peroxide?

Yes that is from the peroxide attacking the algae.
How many days are you on now?

I had 4 circulation pumps in my 56 and could not get rid of the cyno or get my nitrates down, Had too much live rock that was actually holding more waste than my substrate. Replaced substrate with the finest live sand I could find and replaced the type of live rock and less rock to allow circulation through the rocks, The Gyre circulation is consistent across the tank as it pulls the water from the bottom and makes a complete loop along the bottom of the sand. My other power heads left dead spots.

Well the only thing I can say about if the peroxide is working right now is that my future wife just texted me and said that she thinks Trumps hair is slowly getting destroyed.

To me I thought the same thing but I'm biased I would say cause I want the H2O2 to work. So it was good to hear it from someone else as well. There are plenty of "bubbles" still attached to the GHA fighting it I would guess.

If u want to skip down to the bottom to the words in red u can but I'm bored at work so I'm going to tell a story

I mean it's only day three point five and Trumps hair has been the same since at least the early 80's. And it doesn't look like it's going anywhere soon. If anything it's gaining power and Trump might be the first earthling to ever go Super Saiyan. Esp if he becomes president. As seen in the following pictures it's not that far fetched of a theory. image.jpeg image.png
So I'm fighting a strain of GHA that has clearly come from planet Vegeta. So I'm bound to loose.

But like every DBZ movie or series ever the good guys are always underpowered and an underdog. And they never give up. That's where I was on Sunday getting my buttocks kicked and down to my last breath. Until I remember I had something in my fanny pack. I could barely move tho I had no energy at all. I started to go for it but jut couldn't muster up the energy. Then the future wife came barging in just in the nick of time seeing what I was going for she unziped my fanny pack and feed me the only thing that could get me back in the fight. She gave me a sensu bean.
image.png

I jumped back to my feet. Cracked my neck fingers and back. I was ready for the fight once more. But this GHA wasn't going to fall to kamahamahaaa. It needed something bigger. I called on all the fishes in the sea, I called on @twilliard, I called for all hydrogens and all the oxygens to combine into H2O2. Before I knew it I had a spirit bomb of peroxide above my head. image.png (Yes that is me who needs a six pack when u look like that and I know I should have combed my hair but if u look closely u can see the fanny pack) I dumped 40ml of peroxide in the tank. It took everything I had to control the spirit bomb just right.

It was a direct hit to Donald's hair!!!!

I saved the tank from him!!!
And just like every DBZ battle the Earth is ruined and it takes a couple days to rebuild it back to its old self. And that brings us to today.

I truly believe that Peroxide has started to kill the GHA and if I just left everything the way it was on Sunday (with the phosban reactor running and not feeding it any food) that the GHA would still be running rampant instead of floating around in the water column and in my sock. Which I now have to clean out every day instead of every three. My shrimp is still fine along with all the Copepods. And I think if u are fighting a battle with GHA u should be doseing peroxide. Maby not as much as me but at least 3 mg for every ten gallons INTO THE OVERFLOW BOX. I beleive that is the reason my shrimp is still alive. As it gives time for the peroxide to disperse. I thank twillard for letting me pick his brain and help me with my problem without him I would just have an ugly hairy tank(Trump) So if u read all of it thanks for ur time I've been on a DBZ kick lately if u couldn't tell and here is the pictures from today. U can clearly see that the top left rock isn't as dense as it was Sunday let alone yesterday. On a side note I have touched nothing on the tank at all nothing havnt cleaned the glass and I only put my hand in it once to remove a clump of hair.
Thanks again

Looking good my freind!
Keep it going hard and you will win ;)

My GHA was introduced into my system through a frag plug. For two years I blamed that frag because everything was in order. I had 100% coverage of my rocks two months ago, while cleaning around the aquarium one day I bumped my timer knocking the light schedule from 11 hours to 8 hours a day, two months now I only have about 5% or less GHA.

That's awesome congrats. I'm hopeing I can knock it out forever. And have 0%. So mabye after I am done this experiment people like u with a lil GHA can finally knock it out of your tank for good.
Personally if I was u I would be doing 3 ml per ten gallons twice a day to see if u can get that 5% gone for good. I have seen no bad side effects and the only thing that is dieing is the GHA. Good luck with everything

Ah shucks I forgot to hit post but this is what it looked like yesterday. I'll do what it looks like today in a bit.

There is tons of GHA being blown off the rock and floating in my water column. The shrimp is still cruising trumps hair.
image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg
Have a great day.
Justin

It looks like the GHA is clumping up . It looks like it is giving up on life. I added a penductor on to my return pump nozzle and the one rock in its way is now totally clear along with the sand. It's just floating in my tank now. Shrimp is still kicking it enjoying his big tank all to himself and the Copepods are still littering my glass. So I would say all good in this guys hood. image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg last pic is my new skimmer. Yea boyyyyyy. Hope everyone had a great Friday night. And wish us luck on me and my future wife gettin the house we looked at today.
God Bless
Justin

Sorry guys I have been in the middle of buying a house and I have been very busy. I have not taken any photos as of late but I still dose the peroxide and still no problems the hair is starting to detach from the rock in fact I took a couple pieces out and ran it under ro water and the hair literally fell off. Put the corals back in the tank as I was forgetting about them in the qt frag system I ghettoly made and they have not been effected by the h2o2 either shrimp is still cleaning it up and alive and well will post photos when I get home if I remember
Thanks Justin

It's been almost a month since your last post. I'm curious how the tank is doing?
The peroxide attacked the biological filtration and it blew up my tank and house. No one was hurt tho as we were not at home but we came home to firetrucks and the law. I had to spend a couple days in jail because it's illegal to make ur house explode they considered it the same as making a bomb. I'm on the terrorist list now. But it did in fact eliminate the hair algea as I could not find any of it anywhere in the rubble.

Nah it worked great my original plan was to just dose peroxide but the LFS down the road had a grand reopening and I won a 25% off any live stock for that day only coupon. So I loaded up on margarita snails. I have about 15 snails in my tank right now and as u will see in the photos that 15 snails and peroxide work amazingly. Also I want to mention that the peroxide was I guess attacking the GHA and defeating it by making it just fall off the rocks. It wouldn't just disappear but with good flow in ur tank it will go into ur socks. It was actually very interesting to see everything happen. The GHA would collect bubbles from the peroxide and when the bubbles exploded is the word I would use Maby popped? I don't know tho but when that happened the GHA would be removed from the rock and start flowing around in the display tank. I mean to the point that if I put a net in the tank and just left it there it would collect tons of algea in five mins. I was changing my socks out every day or day and a half when I was doing it every three days before and that was because the sock was overflowing with water.

The shrimp well he didn't make it. Well not in his original skin anyway. It was quite weird actually I was looking at the tank instead of the tv like I usually do and I saw the shrimp just get blown around like a rag doll and then it got stuck on the intake to my closed loop system. After 20 mins of him not moving I got up off the couch sad that my shrimp just died. I stuck my hand in the tank to get him out of there and it just happened that he wasn't dead but he molted. In my hand I had all the characteristics of my shrimp the tentacles the body but no shrimp. I looked where he usually hangs out and he as there. So my shrimp molted in peroxide treatment. Pretty cool and weird stuff.

I stopped doseing peroxide about three weeks ago. And no GHA has come back. Trumps hair never stood a chance. In the photos below the right side rocks aren't the same had a rockalanche from one of the snails being a snail. But they always stayed in the water I never cleaned them and peroxide did all the work.

Now what u guys will all scroll to without reading the above the photos

My new skinned shrimp also anyone know what that is on his body the bubble looking thing? Heard it was an isotope or something like that and it's ok for him to live with it.

Any questions don't hesitate to ask

Peroxide works great on bubble algae too! Fill a turkey baster with it, and blast it at the bubble algae. Within two days the algae is clear. Eventually it looks like cellophane. It's great stuff!
