Grey Smooth Hound

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! I'm not a shark expert but I'm glad you're here. Good luck with your adventure!

Welcome to R2R!

Sharks are a different ballgame. 600 gallons can hold many fish but sharks pose different issues.

Is it difficult to keep a grey smooth hound in a 600 gallon aquarium? It’s 10 feet by 4 feet.
500g minimum recommended. As close to an ocean shark as you can get. Tank should work

I am being told the grey smooth hound is difficult to keep alive. Asking to see if anyone has had success with them.
Ive never had one but when I had my Pet store, supplier mentioned they had one and it was very reluctant to eat. At the time I didnt know much about them and was intending to place it in a 150g- that would not have gone well
I do know the challenge is that they are messy feeders and dont tolerate nitrate well

Love the feeding !!!

If I remember correctly they can grow to 6' plus in length. Also they were illegal on the west coast for many years along with Leopard Sharks. They prefer cooler water so a chiller is recommended. They grow very quickly and make explosive waste in the aquarium. A very large filtration system like a trickle tower with mechanical, large protein skimmer, U.V. and ozone injection work quite well. We built tanks for a customer that were 16' long, 3'wide, and 4' tall. They were populated by both Grey Smooth Hounds and Leopard Sharks and a Ray and large Puffer fish. They love both shrimp and crabs as their main diet. They are active and fun to watch.

All that said I would not recommend them for such a small tank. In fact unless you are in the public aquarium size range you should leave them in the ocean. Even though I have done this type of display in the past I would not do it again with out the proper sized tank. These sharks need very large tanks in the multiple thousand gallon range to allow for their proper care. Please reconsider placing them in such a small tank. They should not even be offered for sale in the trade. This is best left to public aquariums.
