I acquired an orange back Fairy Wrasse about a month ago and it came out of the bag with missing scales and a bacterial infection. I managed to use the proper quantities of bacterial medication and he has been doing good for the last month. However approximately one fifth of the scales on one side of his body behind his Gill went missing during in the beginning. I really don't see much growth progress. It's still just a light red blotch. How long do scales take to come back and color up or do they? Thanks

Typically you would have seen regrowth by now...

Can you post a pic?

What antibiotics did you use?

Metro, kanoplex, and furan combo. I can't get a good HD picture. He does have tiny red blotches over other parts of the body.

I'm wondering if I should just finish up my quarantine with the prazi and put him in the DT and maybe he will get better. QT kind of sucks.

Like two or three botches I mean, nothing crazy, he eats great and acts much better now than he did before I started treating. With no significant Improvement and no decline.

Do you have NFG?

If it were me I would make a good at it with 10-14 days of NFG and then move to DT. Your fish though.

Is this another med I need to add to my fish medicine cabinet?

I am reporting back on this. The overall health of the fish remains well, eating and active. I placed him in the dt, I did not use the nfg on him. He still has the same area on the side of his body with no color. It's been two months and no color has appeared. I think the scales are there but they are clear maybe. I don't know what to think, will they ever come back fully?

Here is the kicker, I purchased another large male Wrasse and placed him in QT, the same thing is happening!! I didnt restart the qt or anything. What kind of disease is this? I can see the full scale laying on the bottom of the tank.
Disease or the only other common thing is a male lyretail anthia is I'm there of which I banished from the display. He did show aggressive posture to the new Wrasse but I have seen no other aggression. I'm at a loss. I don't find anything in the disease thread other than maybe bacterial that could explain that.

In the mean time I have ordered nfg and I'm thinking of abandoning the anthia completely. I had thoughts of starting a anthia only tank but they are not worth the trouble in my opinion.

I’m not sure about the missing scales but Uronema causes blotchy spots and has been becoming common with Anthias. From what you are saying I highly doubt this is the case but look into it.

I would be more cautious. I had a few fish like this in the past few months where those blotches became lesions that would not heal despite trying different meds. Eventually the fish would perish.

I look for these spots right away when I get fish shipped to me and report it ASAP. I have had some last weeks and just slowly deteriorate.

Great... Tapatalk thinks my picture of my dead lineatus is an adult picture , so I can’t upload it [emoji1751]‍[emoji3603]

I think we may be having the same experience. Over two months later my orange back is still alive and eating. I would say he is growing or fat. His side definitely is not coloring back up but I think it's got something covering the tissue. I have experienced uronema in anthias before and it is always a terrible ending. I have have never seen it in a wrasse.

Here is a couple pictures of the current speciman. The anthia that is in the tank is qt is fineand had been in my dt for over a year before banishment. I have been treating with a couple different meds but the nfg got here today so a 50% water change and then treatment tonight. Also moving anthia to lower qt tank which had a anthia with uronema 6-7 weeks ago. It's been uncirculated and unheated, uninhabited so hopefully it's low risk.

How did you recover your fish? I'm more concerned that since these two Wrasse have particularly large scales how long/when will they grow and go back to the proper color?

If I recall uronema does not need a host and can only be killed by certain strong meds or bleach the tank.

If it is in fact uronema in my first Wrasse and it was not killed/cured then it's a likely scenario that I introduced a bad thing into my dt. Hopefully not.

Definitly not uronema. If it was your wrasse would be dead by now. I have a yellow assessor with something similar. Its scales never grew back. I think it may actually be a scarred area. If the area is not getting bigger or turning into an open ulcer it is not anything to worry about.

Doesn't look like urnomea to me. Looks like missing scales from an injury. What else is in qt with the fish?

Just the male anthia and him. The only simularity between both instances is the water was not sterilized, I had not reason to believe it needed it and that anthia was present. He is mean and has showed side but never seen a nip. But that doesn't mean anything I suppose. I should have gotten rid of him weeks ago. Maybe he is the culprit, it just seems like it would take a lot of aggression for this damage to occur. It also would gradually get worse. I would come in and see another scale on the bottom. The Wrasse has lot 4 or 5 now I think. Very large scales, almost 3/16" long each.

Here are 2 that I saved the picture of. I had a few others too.

What meds did you treat these guys with? It looks like it may have been bacterial Uronema is definitely a possibility as well here.
