Can anyone tell me if this is normal.
I've been dosing hydrogen peroxide to my tank and have noticed that my redox drops massively when dosing

Yes it’s very common to the degree I’ve never seen it do any other action when added to a tank in these threads. First I saw of it was from rc 2009, in a thread Boomer had made about the phenomena.

organics are suspected

hey for helpful data, can you possibly do this experiment and post the comparative measures? It helps us get a picture of organics being at play for the readings

take one pitcher of water which is tank water, and add peroxide. Give it about five mins to set then post redox measure/ tank water only

take one pitcher of water and this is freshly made saltwater / next time youre doing a water change...measure redox and post, then one more measure after dosing peroxide (low organics comparative set, can this one show raised orp vs drop?)

from those measures it seems you can rule out/rule in the organic factors as the reason adding an oxidizer is causing an acid response in your system. We can see it’s effects in the high organic system measure from your post, scale it down using water dilutions to proof the cause of the reading. What if the measure still drops in the clean water test? calamity lol

Thanks, and yes would be happy to do the experiment, a pitcher is 2 litres? And how much H2O2 is dosed to that ?

a couple drops sounds decent, whatever it takes to get a rise or drop, i bet two drops would work/fun to see. Im not sure the threefold test has been ran before but ive always wondered how it would turn out

technically we would want to scale down your dose above. how many gallons/how much peroxide 3% did you add

I'll aim to be the first person the weekend then.
It's 800 litre water volume and 30ml of H202

Just an oddity with very little meaning probably.

See post #78 of this thread

My best guess of why adding an oxidizer (H2O2) lowers ORP is that it breaks open organisms (e.g., bacteria) in the local environment where first added, releasing low ORP chemicals.

I wonder though. The ORP effect occurs in the absence of biomass

In sterile water? If so, then my theory is wrong.

The reference I quoted does not specify the use of sterile water, only sodium chloride solution. So, no need to retract your hypothesis yet :-)
