Halide Lighting Advise. 250-Watt-Hamilton w Moonlight ?

Back in the 90's I started out with 440 watts of VHO's over my 75g reef. I really liked them and near the end, I removed two tubes and tried a 175w halide, but two months later I gave up the hobby, so my test didn't last long enough.

A year ago, we got back in the hobby, and was surprised that LED's had taken over, with the exception of very large home tanks and public aquariums. So, I bought a "Chinese" box type LED, and then three Maxspect Razors, which are pretty nice, but still has the dreaded "disco affect", and I hate that !

Next, I bought a Kessil 160 and now three 360we's for a in wall 125g mixed reef that we're building now. I really like them, but I'm still thinking about the halides for the crisp white light adding either blue T-5's or blue LED's to my liking and for moon light.

I really don't want to fool with a chiller. I spoke with a guy that is selling his 72" with three halides and said he never use a chiller. It's the Hamilton Cebu 6 light with electronic ballest it has 3 12000 k 250watt mogal and 4 t5 all bulbs.

I like the Reef Brite Halide Hybrid, but the cost is too much.

If going to a halide/t-5/led system will become a problem kr a hastle, I believe the Kessil's wiil be fine.

I have a 300 gallon with 3 250 watt metal halids and 2 vho. Would not change them coral growth is great. I do have a chiller but it only kicks on in the summer time

Like I mentioned,......I like the Reef Brite Halide Hybrid, but the cost is too much. Unless, I could sell the three Maxspect's I have, then buy them.

We keep our house almost chilly, by some people. Summer 68, winter 64.

Robert, do you use fans over the display or sump ?

We plan on having several SPS's, but for a 125g, will three 250 watts be ok, or too much for LPS's ?

No .At those temp I don't think my chiller would run in summertime .we set house temp at 70 in winter and 75 in summer

Now I'd love to afford,..... the Giesemann Metal Halide fixture. Cream of the crop, I believe.
$1,500 bucks isn't too bad though, especially versus like a EcoTech, which could be $3,000 for my 6' tank. EEK !

Everyone I talked to about halide recommended mogul base radium or something close to it in bulbs. Most tried the double end but end up back to the mogul base so I just went ahead to the 250.

Dang, guess I was wrong, on the cost of the wonderful light of Giesemann, way wrong,.....

On top of the $1,500 fixture, I would need to buy the ballast, four fluorescent tubes and all three halides ?
If so,....wow !

That's just a dream now.

Yes Giesemann are high dollar for sure. DE bulbs are harder to find in higher wattage bulbs.
The Giesemann has a better finish than the Hamilton. I have seen both in person and club members homes and at MACNA.
When I upgrade my tank I will be getting a Giesemann as it is already wife approved. The aquarium is in HER living room and so I give her a choice which fixtures she likes and she chose the Giesemann. That way I don't get in trouble for spending more money.

Yes for sure. You can get the Hamilton and extra bulbs for what the fixture cost. LOL

I know, just wish I had the money, and a VERY,.....understanding wife like "reefwiser". Lol......

Actually, my wife is wonderful and loves this hobby as well, but not $3,000 for just lights ! I want the Giesemann so bad !

I have 150 wat De 20k lamp on my IM40 full of SPS. An it's not that my wife is understand it's that she has to look at the light fixture all the time. An it is worth it to her to have something that nice to look at. [emoji3]

But your 40g isn't as deep as my 125g. With a 20k is the halide the only light ?

Yes mine is 19 inches deep. The Reefbrite unit has front and back blue led bar.
