Last nite was looking at my hammer and it wasn't looking to hot. So I immediately did a couple buckets full.lately I have notice some hair algae in tank so purchased some tech m.checked my calcium the other night numbers were high 550 kh was rd 9.5 salinity 1.027 the other day it was fully opened, have not dosed anything to my system since I seen number was high, mag was rd 1600,wake up this morning look at tank while I drink my coffee and hammer looks to be losing 3 heads.I'm not to sure what to do .I don't test for phosphates or anything other .only tests I run is cal alk and mag,I always no that phosphates are always present, tank been running for a few yrs I've been in out of fish hobby for rd 17 yrs.usually lot of ppl I know ask me for advice.but I'm not to sure what to do with hammer coral. While back one of my acans in this tank lost a couple heads also, would pests do this to LPS or would this be something to do with water quality ,I also feed some brine shrimp and mysis this week to it looked fine

I think tech m only helps with bryopisis.
I would just do some water changes. Get your salinity down. If your not going to test anything I would just do water changes to get you do check to normal range.

I was thinking it could be bryopisis or hair algae figured I needed to bring mag up. But the hammer coral the heads there are dying almost look as if there turning into slime or mucus

just a quick update on tech m...they updated the formula so it no longer kills bryopsis. Unless you purchase the older stuff, it wont work.
the cal/alk/mag isnt too out of whack so it makes me think its not that. Ive ran worse before as far as salinity as well.
Are you running low/no nutrients? If so, how often do you feed the tank?
You said youve been in and out for 17 years but how old is this tank?

What color is the remaining mucus?

You could probably start with a good coral dip...

Wonder if anyone on the #reefsquad has experience with this sort of thing?

Folks have been having success against Bryopsis lately with an anti-fungal medication called Fluconazole - you might look into that, as I can attest that Tech-M no longer contains whatever "magic ingredient" once worked against it.

This tank is 3 n half maybe 4 yrs old. Thanks for letting me know that tech m doesn't do the job anymore. Wish I would of new that b4 I spent the money on it. The lights rampin up so I can't really tell what color the mucus is.I just ran to store grabbed some iodione. And I put coral in rx b4 I ran to store, should I rinse the rx off and use the iodine ,I am new to the iodine dip so kind of skeptical

Check for Brown Jelly Disease. Hammers are susceptible to this. Also looks like the hammer and trumpet are very close together. Surprised the hammer hasn't killed the trumpet (candy cane). FYI, trumpets are susceptible to brown jelly as well.

There are no candy canes in this tank there are some nuclear green polyps on the rock the hammer is on ,brown jelly I have no clue about how would a person go about checking this ?thank you

Those are not candy canes u see those are the hammer heads that I'm losing

Got it....after looking closely I'm now seeing that. Brown jelly is brown and is jelly looking and attacks the soft tissue of some LPS. It actually is a protozoan, with some having luck with multiple dips in iodine. If that's what you have, I'd google and see if there are other dips that are good for brown jelly.

Would brown jelly kill mushrooms ?I forgot a couple weeks ago I lost a Yuma also and maybe a month or so b4 that a couple acan heads died on a colony.

Any one with a recent link to using iodine dips?
Ive only ever used iodine on zoas and unfortunately it wasted away anyway. I did 6 drops per 1 cup of tank water then rinsed before I put it back into the tank.
BJD would not kill mushrooms. As far as Im aware, it doesnt kill acans either. It seems more of a water issue than a disease if its affecting multiple species. Not saying that you cant have it-maybe its that and another underlying issue?
What are the most recent tests for nitrates? (some of us, myself included, have a good idea on what they have based on coral health and coloration-sometimes it can change rapidly without any warning signs so thats why I ask)

Have not tested for nitrate in a while, lately though I've been vacumclean the sand bed and blasting some rocks here and there.I have replaced all my filters in the rodi recently .but for over a month I did not run a skimmer,I'm go dig around see if I can find a nitrate test.but I did do a decent water change yesterday when I seen the coral wasn't looking good, probably rd 15 gallons I had changed, this is 75 gal with 30 sump but I estimate water to around 80 gallons /mixed reef there is a pretty good amount of stuff in tank also 3 fire fish 1 lobster 1 tang 2 clowns, maybe 5 LPS maybe 20 sps then some softies, what gets me is nothing else in this tank looks like this I have a big bicolor hammer in middle and it's fine.so with this in mind would you still suspect nitrates? So far this is how I've took action changed water lastnite ,removed coral this morning and dipped in rx for maybe 15 min then rinse with mixed batch of saltwater, then iodine dip I took out within 5 minutes coral wasn't looking good rinsed again put back in tank, removed gfo in reactor and running some carbon now.anything else I could do?

no....it doesnt seem like it would be that knowing all of that.
(cool lobster lol)
How old was that hammer thats having issues was it a new addition?

It is probably 3 yrs old at least. I did frag about a month ago and everything was opened after I fragged, This is why reef tank have the love hate thing going..... hate the stress sometimes .. but love the eye candy

Yeah.pic of it now then my other hammer open and happy.... wish I had a clue but the more I read the less I feel I know
