Hands down what is the best salt mix????

yup i had the same question as OP before and chose red sea coral pro too. i'm doing a water change tomorrow. if you like i can post my coral response and test my water. will be doing a 25g WC on a 180 system.

Red Sea Coral Pro... Never tried any other salts... If it ain't broke don't fix it...

I've been using salinity for about six months and like it so far.

TM salt pro reef. Pro Reef has a high CA/MAG content. I also sub the pro-reef with Bio-actif supplement. No cyano issues since I switched previously used IO and Reef Crystal.

I have a pretty big system, and like to use plain old Instant Ocean.
It is cheap, available everywhere, mixes easily, and is pretty consistent on Mg/Alk/Ca.
Yes, it is low on Ca/Mg. But it is consistently low.
As a result, it is easy to know what you need to add each time.
And IO + Bulk Additives is cheaper than most of those fancy ones.
And being low in Ca, it mixes without snowstorm concerns.

Unrelated note: Who was the marketing person that came up with the name "Salinity Salt?"
I hate that. On the other hand, I remember it. ... Oh well.

I use which ever Reef salt is at the best price for 150 gallon mix( the actucal mix is closer to 120 gallon) at 1.024. I always equalize my change water so the Ion's are all the same.

I had been using Kent salt. Most of the reefers in the portland area seem to use this because you can get it cheaply and it is readily available. I'm trying the Seachem aquavitro and don't have to add Alk to it like I did the Kent.

i use red sea pro cause it cuts down on dosing ... it has everything under the sun in it for your corals

Here is my experience with a few types....

IO - started with it...had no problems but switched brands because of threads like this...just wanted to see what different salts "did"

Reefers Best - noticed no significant different other than price, plus the shipping (cant find locally)

Tropic Marin Pro - same as above

Salinity - PE seemed better, but who knows...could be caused by a number of things. Also increased price plus shipping

Kent - a lot of fluctuations in main parameters from the start

Reef Crystals - very much like IO, levels a bit different though

IO - I'm back to it and have been for over a year. I will probably stick with it. No problems at all, consistent, and they've been around forever. Plus the price is nice...I can get a box for the price of one bag of others...that means more money on corals

Again, as already stated...find what works best for you and stick with it. Good luck!

As subielover said, there isnt a best salt.

But I do stand by Reef Crystals out of all of them... I want to try Brightwell, I hear its nice, but can cause Cyano problems.

Reef crystals has too much ca and alk if you ask me. I prefer regular instant ocean in case I need to lower ca or alk, I could always dose to raise it.
