Hanna alk checker or Red Sea

Does the instructions that come with it say shake the bottle. Not what it says on the color coated card stalk?
If the bottle is supposed to be shaken and you have that same reagent that is also second hand. If that bottle is not 100% shaken from the beginning and every following time 100% shaken correctly. Then every drop of it will become more and more inaccurate as the bottle is used.
I had that happen with an API Masters Test kit. It was reading 40ppm when it was 1.5ppm
@40B Knasty , the bottle shaking is relevant to the API Nitrate test kit, but has no relevance in this thread. @chickenreef don't worry if you're not shaking the Red Sea alkalinity reagent bottle. It doesn't need it.
 
The reagents are new, I bought a new bottle not too long ago. The readings were pretty accurate to me until I tested with the red sea lol..I'll ask my lfs to test it lol. The tests are so easy though, Hanna add 10ml, then 1ml of reagent. Rs.5ml water and drop until it turns a different color.
There are calibration check kits that Hanna sells and I check my Hanna Alk tester every 2 to 3 months. Still producing accurate results. The reagent can certainly be the issue though. I suppose that I could do a test with the reagent on my RODI water periodically to make sure I get the same results. This should check the condition of the reagent.
 
That's what I'll do, just have the lfs confirm their number.

+2. My Hannah and RS Pro are giving me similar alk results. Since you're going to your LFS at some point anyway, might as well have them test your water and see what results they get and compare. Take note of what test kit they use too.

Personally I have dropped all test kits after seeing the BRSTV video about test kits. The only one I trust is the ELOS test kit. The reagents are all certified by NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology). This means the only mistakes made is done by the user. Everything that is provided is accurate.

My Hanna and Red Sea Pro give readings pretty close to each other. They are always close enough to where I want between 8.5 and 9.5 that I only check about once a month unless the tank looks off.
 
My salifert and Hanna Checker are showing almost identical results for Alk testing. Usually within 0.1 meq
 
I use both Hanna and Red sea Alk test. So far I am getting .3 difference in reading. However, this could be more user error which is true with all color test.
 
If anything arrives damaged your eligible for a refund...My red sea pro kit arrived with the entire MG solution leaking out, they send me a new!

You just drop the regent until the color changes to the second color.. Once the color is changing you can still add a few more drops until color is solid. Take the amount used and you got your reading.. Remember, consistency is key so if you mess you test today make sure you mess up the next time. At least you'll know how much Kh your tank needs. lol
 
i use Hanna and ELOS - they are (understanding that ELOS is subject to interpretation when HANNA shows 8.2 as an example) - i'm finding them pretty close - and because a few weeks ago I had an ALK crash, I'm currently testing daily.
