Hanna alk checker or Red Sea

How old is the reagent for the Hanna? Is it close to the expiration date? I used to get up and down readings with mine but when I started storing the reagent in an upright position my readings have been rock solid.
I found the exact same thing.

One way to validate accuracy is get a HI772-11 Alkalinity Standard for your Checker. One of the nice features of our Checkers is they never need to be calibrated however you can purchase a validation kit to make sure your device is not readings outside of its designated accuracy statement. The HI772 (dKH) and HI755 (ppm) Marine alkalinity Checkers utilize an absorbance curve for seawater and thus in order for the accuracy statement to be maintained its recommended to utilize full strength seawater for those two Checkers. We do have our HI775 Freshwater Alkalinity Checker which is based off of the colorimetric method but has a different range and different reagent. Also the HI775 needs our HI93755-53 Chlorine Remover Reagent if chlorine is present in the freshwater sample. The color change is also slightly different between the marine Checkers and the Freshwater Alkalinity Checker.

For the Marine our manual states:
Colorimetric method. The reaction causes a distinctive range of colors from yellow to green to greenish blue to develop

For freshwater our manual states
Colorimetric method. The reaction causes a distinctive range of colors from yellow to blue to develop. This meter has been developed to work with fresh water samples.

Although the meters are similar we recommend uses the HI755/HI772 with full strength seawater and the HI775 with freshwater samples.

I am noticing the same thing for me. 9.2 Hanna, 8.4 salifert.

When keeping our reagent you need to store it at room temperature (+15°C to +25°C) (59F-77F) and protect from light and moisture. Do not keep them in your stand cabinet or refrigerator. I cannot speak for the shelf life stability for Salifert or if they have a material safety data sheet to look up this information. Always run multiple tests average results if you are concerned. Having a standard for our Checkers is also not a bad idea as it will reassure you that your unit is functioning at its best and producing results within its accuracy statement. When running the Salifert, make sure to read the results in the same ambient light, often behind a white background to make sure the color change is properly observed. Furthermore, make sure you are not under or over tirtrating with Salifert which is generally an issue when determining color changes. Make sure the syringe is filled correctly we have seen issues with hobbyists not reading/filling syringes correctly sometimes. This is due to the tip being applied and uncertainty to where the actual 1ml fill mark is. When observing the color change of blue/green to orange-red or pink color Salifert states to use whichever color is observed first.

I think its great they are on these forums giving us advice, I know some of the videos they have put out helped me with the ULR phosphate checker.

I need to watch that to make sure I'm doing it correctly. That's one of the harder tests IMO...or easier to mess up.

Yes I agree, when I started cutting the packet correctly and making it into a funnel it became very easy to pour the reagent in without spilling it.

Thanks we think its cool too! We believe in customer service and scientific integrity above all else. The only difference between the HI772 dkH and HI755 ppm Alkalinity Checkers is an internal conversion factor which does the calculation for you. The chemistry, accuracy, range and reagents are the same. We updated the reagent product code used for the HI772 dKH Alkalinity Checker. The new code is:

This have been updated from the HI755-26. The chemical used is still the same we just created a new code to match our reagent categorization system. The HI755-26 Alkalinity reagent for the ppm Marine Checker is still an active code and the reagents can be used interchangeably.

Make sure to use scissors and cut along the dotted line on the reagent sachet. Also open your packet before turning on the Checker. This thread has some further suggestions which many reefers found helpful!

the calibration kits are in fact different. They might be able to be used interchangeably however this has not been formally tested and we recommend using the calibration kit for each designated Checker. The HI772 dkh uses the HI772-11 and the HI755 ppm uses the HI755-11.

Let me ask a different sort of question. If you have a reef tank with a total alkalinity of 7 dKH at a pH of 8.5, does your method give exactly the same result (7 dKH, within the claimed error) as when the alkalinity is 7 dKH and the pH starts at pH 7.7?

The total amount of CO2 is obviously very different, and that is known to impact the proper pH endpoint of aa total alkalinity titration, making any particular pH endpoint not exactly right for both cases.

But I'm wondering how it impacts your method which is not simply a pH titration.
