Man it’s been a long day and I can’t figure out the results for the life of me, read so many articles etc.

so I added cupramine 1 week ago on Friday last Sunday was when I added the 2nd dose which was meant to be 0.5mg/l of copper I used the salifert test kit which showed similar results.1 week later my yellow tang has white spots and his flashing again.Bought a hanna checker tested the water and I got 1.23. It’s a high range one am I way over the recommended? Or am I way under can’t figure it out.

sorry if it’s sounds silly.

I have never used the copper checker with cupramine. But it’s been extremely accurate for me with copper power. I would check it again, because being almost triple what you expect doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Did you zero the unit with tank water?

Just did it another 2 times I’ve cleaned the bottle properly no finger prints or water marks. 1st reading 1.23 2nd reading 1.50 3 rd reading 1.82

I did the first test with water from the tank but with no reagent

I would do a water change right away just in case it really is that high. Then zero it out like dwest said. Hannah does make a standard kit to make sure the checkers are calibrated correctly. How old is the checker?

There‘s a problem. You shouldn’t get that amount of variability. I would double check your method then contact Hanna. Sorry.

I'm not a fan of these "calibration" sets from Hannah.

Way more useful would be a standard solution to test, not just a cuvette that checks the operation of the device and ignores reagent issues.

Guys what the heck I did it again it’s showing 2.17 now? I did the salifert kit and there’s no way it’s over 1.0

I was under the impression that the solution inside those calibration cuvettes was something we can check against?

It checks the device optics only. You pop in the cuvette and measure the number you see. There is no use of reagents, no test of operator technique, vials, etc.

A simple standard would be far more valuable, and likely, much less positive for the device reproducibility.. lol

Cupermine will take a bit of time to ramp up to the desired levels, be patient and slow when adding it, or you'll have to do a water change and dose cupermine to the new water to match the tank.

The Hanna high range checker does have an error bar of +/- 0.05, however the readings you are getting are way beyond that range.

Try testing the same sample multiple times to see what the checker says?

Are you absolutely certain you are getting all of the reagent into the vial?

Is your reagent expired?

I did the same sample 5 times within a few mins of each other. I also just got the hanna checker yesterday so not sure what’s going on

Update : sent the item to hanna and they e called me saying their engineers checked it and it’s all fine.... literally just told me make sure your test tube is clean when you use it... as if I didn’t clean it furiously - they are now sending it back. Personally don’t think I did anything wrong with the measurements watched multiple videos etc. Very odd

I have had a dirty dropper before that caused higher results. Always flush all your tubes and droppers with the tank water first imho.

The photo with your sample looks undissolved to me and really hazy, maybe it's just the photo. Mine ends up clear and tinted pink after 15 seconds of good shaking, then a microfiber cloth and into the checker.

The reagent may have expired if its been sitting on the shelf of your LFS for ages. I used the Hanna HR and bought new reagent

when you say "testing the same sample multiple times", are you adding reagent again to a sample that's already tested?

No added reagent once and tested the same sample back to back giving those readings.

Yeah the colour seemed off of the solution but the reagents are all in date so not sure
