hanna testing kits

Order some reagents and another brand of test kit and try for yourself. The Hanna and Redsea have had identical results on my end.

My suggestion... Cause this threw me for a loop first time I used it too... Slow down what you are doing, and ensure your following the directions to a tee.

It sounds like you may be filling the syringe with reagent to much.

I have the Hana DKH and I use it daily, a Hanna CA that I use weekly. The CA was pretty tricky to figure out why my readings were off from the Red Sea, when I figured it out it wasn't the checker at all, it was the user. And now I get between 5-10ppm between the Hanna and the Red Sea CA Pro.

I have the Alk, Cal & Phosphate checkers from Hanna, the only one that is most impossible to use is the calcium checker, the dosage between water and reagent needs to be so accurate that it is impossible to get two times the same result.

Alk and Phosphate ones a very constant and accurate if you do it right.

They are very accurate if you are consistent with testing method. Scratches don't matter if you orient the vial the same way for the "tare" and the actual test. I go as far as to not touch the glass at all after the zeroing in step so I don't smudge the vial. Do not try to use separate vials to zero and to test. Draw a vertical line with a fine point sharpie across both the vial and the checker (above where the vial goes into the checker obviously) so that you are always aligning the vial in the same spot.

I don't know why people put themselves through the trouble with the Hanna alkalinity... Single reagent titration test kits are so easy to use, can be very cheapm, and are generally pretty accurate. I use the API with a wider vial and a 5ml syringe, works great and I can can perform the test from beginning to end in about 15 seconds. Even if you have and like the Hanna, it's a good idea to have one on hand to cross reference or for once you finally grow tired of the more complicated tests ;)

I have a hard time with the color charts. I find the Hannah much easier to get a result. If I get a spurious result I will repeat the test and if needed confirm with titration test

the Hanna Alk checker is a single reagent as well, I find it easy to use, and accurate. I find it much easier to use then any of the tiration color based since they all have such subtle changes for my eyes.

No charts, just a change from blue to yellow. Perhaps people with color blindness with struggle with that change in that case the Hanna makes perfect sense.

I order the same exact pipettes. It made a huge difference in reproducibility and accuracy. I've worked in labs all my life and it's nearly impossible to measure small volumes with syringes. Just get the pipettes and you'll be very happy with the numbers.

Also your volume measurements need tobe very consistent. I ordered these from amazon

I have one for 1000ul and one that dispenses 100ul. I also use 10 ml syringes to measure the same volume rather than filling to the line on the bottle

Ok can someone explain why I would get the 1000ul and not one that does say 5 10 15 20 25 ? I take it that a ultimate is the same as a ml.

Thank you! Hanna must be listening to their customers because my calcium kit came with a 100ul pipelette with it.

Are you pressing the button just once after adding the solution? If you press and hold like on the phosphate checkers it will do a countdown and give a false reading. (I think that sends it into calibration mode on the Alk checker)

-Note: this is just for the alk checker. I don't own the calcium one ;)
