Happy as a clam!! Do you keep clams?

Hey there! How many of you enjoy keeping clams? Have you ever kept one? Do you like 'em? Would you do it again? Tell us about your experience with clams! And be sure to show off the ones you have in your tank or ones you've kept in the past!

I've had some pretty nice ones over the years but don't have any in the 75g. This was our last clam in '14 before returning stateside.

I have a baby ora maxima I’ve had for 6 months. It’s been hanging on, not thriving. It came in with sponge growth on it, now the sponge grows so fast I have to manually brush the clam weekly to prevent it from being sealed shut by this sponge. It’s not very fun and I feel bad for my clam. So yea, I have a special needs clam. We get by.

I used to have a bunch of maximas around 10 years ago in my old tank and I’ve tried twice in the last couple of years. Both times the clam has come in with pinched mantle so I’ve decided to not try any more clams unless I can find a established specimen [emoji853]

Yeah, clams are awesome. I just have too many nibblers in my tank now. I too wish I'd had the foresight to take pictures of some I have had in the past. My all time favorite was a green/yellow gigas that I got as a 5" youth in 2001 and sold it 12 years later as an 18" adult (when I could only just squeeze it between the braces on my tank). Always have regretted selling it, though if it still survives, it'd be pushing 2 1/2 feet by now. OOOOOF!

I have a crocea that is approaching 5 inches but was at best slightly over an inch when I got it. Wish I had the before pic but here is a pic from a year ago of he little light lover.

Had it over 3 years now.

I’ve a soft spot for clams and tend to get them at 1” size. These are the ones I’ve currently got taken recently,

I do not Mind them, My wife has me pressured to get a couple. I look at it as Taking up prime tanks spacing for my corals. lol

I have done minimal research on them to first make sure My fish will not Kill it off, and second what all do they need to survive and thrive in my tank.

I got this one at a frag swap in February this year. I had previously decided against one because I read that they are hard to keep. This was one of those "impulse against my better judgement" purchases - the guy threw him in with some corals for $20 I think.

He was an inch or so when I bought him and has roughly tripled in size. All I did was stick him in the sand lol.

I had a blue crocea (that was actually purple) for over 4 years. It grew from being just under 2" to 6" by the time I sold it. I did not find it difficult but my tank was a fairly high nutrient tank. I would very much like to get another clam some day when I do not keep seahorses.

I've tried twice, but they both didn't make it. I thought I had done it with the 2nd one, but my ATO malfunctioned and kept swinging the salinity. I was heatbroken and can't bring myself to do it anymore.

I had a beautiful maxima 11 years ago I had it for about 3-4 years before the great genocide in my tank. Our youngest kid who was about 2 at the time somehow managed to get to the top of the tank and dumped an entire container of pellets into the tank. Nobody knew he did it until I noticed everything melting a day later to this day I tell him he committed reef genocide
