Some clams have beautiful color however they just don't do it for me .

What r the general care requirements / parameters to keep a clam? R there certain ones considered good for beginner clam owners.

My tank is a RSR 250 w/ 2 AI HD prime lights. About 3 years mature. Stocked with montipora and a lot of euphilia.

Derasa are pretty easy to keep, I would advise you get one of them as a first clam.

I’ve been thinking about getting one my LFS have derasa for $50 and maximas for $90 but I like the derasa idea a little more forgiving

Derasa are a great starting clam. Some of the patterns are very nice too.

I used to have a bunch of maximas around 10 years ago in my old tank and I’ve tried twice in the last couple of years. Both times the clam has come in with pinched mantle so I’ve decided to not try any more clams unless I can find a established specimen [emoji853]

You need to purchase from Pac East - call Dr. Mac and you will get a better specimen. Call or email - I just mean to contact. General consensus on the interwebs is they are the go-to source. Heck, check out the acclimation video he did last week on stock they are taking to New York (I think that was it anyway).

Each clam is looked over, brushed, and then tucked away. I mean come on - time is money but that is just dedication in my opinion and yields us a good chance receiving quality known stock.

I like them. unfortunately I just cannot seem to keep them for more than about 8 months. I really have no idea what seems to kill them, but they basically look great one day and dead the next.

My two maxima's have been with me for 7 months as of today (its 10:30 PM on June 3 here in WA). The one on the left in the picture is 5.5 inches and the one on the right is just under 5.75 inches. They are said to be maricultured Tonga origin but seem pretty big unless sales were very slow so they were kept a long time. They are on the bottom now after starting on the rock. The one on the left formed strong byssal attachments but one morning was on the bottom having decided it wasn't happy (had been in the tank about a month). The one on the right never formed attachments so I moved it down next to the other and they have been there since - neither of them has formed byssal attachments, even when I put them on "clam pillows" so I removed those as they look silly anyway. The clams have put on some new shell and each is about 3/8 inch longer than when I got them. I assume they are growing slowly since for maxima's they are fairly large already. You can see algae on the shell of the one on the right. The shells of both are pest factories - algae, sponges, aptaisia (which fortunately don't travel to the rest of the tank) and vermetid snails. I take them out about once a month and thoroughly brush the shells with a toothbrush while pouring fresh saltwater over them. I will scrub them this weekend. While 7 months is not a long time, they do seem to be 'happy as clams' so far.

I spend waaay too much money on clams. Clams > Fish and at least = or greater than coral!

I wish I could do that, been drooling over their stuff for some time. Unfortunately I somehow doubt that they ship to Sweden [emoji1]
We’re very limited in sources for our livestock I’m afraid, it’s mostly all TMC and De Jong.

I just got my first clam. Have no idea what he looks like, he's only about 3/8" open. He came out of a crashing tank. I took all the livestock (corals, rocks, anemone and some hermits. All this but one died. I didnt take the fish) from a fellow reefer. He opens every day, not much, but its more than he was when I got him. Which was about 11 days ago. He seems happier and I'm hoping the little guy pulls through.

I had a beautiful maxima 11 years ago I had it for about 3-4 years before the great genocide in my tank. Our youngest kid who was about 2 at the time somehow managed to get to the top of the tank and dumped an entire container of pellets into the tank. Nobody knew he did it until I noticed everything melting a day later to this day I tell him he committed reef genocide

Just take the rebuild out of his College Funds. Lol

Yeah, right next to 3,000 dollar anemone. To each there own right.....but a 60 dollar clam is over rated and over priced;Hilarious
