Hard lesson learned on christmas day

Decided to pick up a red scooter blenny from an lfs and didn't have a quarantine set up so I did the stupid usual and acclimated it then dropped it in the display. This morning I wake up to see my tang looking like this

Without having a clue what to do I sat down had a cup of coffee and watched my daughter open her gifts, when I realized I had a sump sitting outside so I grabbed it, filled it with water after letting the tank warm up, caught the fish and dropped them in the tank with a filter and a heater nothing else and hit them with some copper treatment. It's not ideal but on Christmas Day its all I have so wish me luck. Also it pays to note that the 20g sump will be a permanent fixture from here on out for quarantine purposes and the dividers will allow for me to hold corals and fish separate for the quarantine time. Due to my lack of diligence in this regard the scooter blenny is already gone, I'm hoping the tang is strong enough to make it, just glad it wasn't a super expensive or rare pet, still hate the loss though.

Start feeding it a lot of food or you could do hypo salinity threatment. And why would you buy a fish from pet palace and not quarentine it. You didnt hear mine and will's horror stories fron their fish. Pet palace dont even care about feeding their fish and if you ask their employees when do they feed them they say that they dont know cause their manager dont let them plus when you ask their manager to feed the fishes before you buy them he wont do it. Their customer service has gone down since the old manager left.

If you are using copper you wont be able to put corals in the tank

You didnt hear mine and will's horror stories fron their fish. Bare bottomed tank with no coral or rock, and to minimize any additional trauma aside from the ich and tank move I just used the water from my display tank leaving enough to cover and circulate for the corals.

Without an established bacterial colony, it might cycle. Also regular ammonia test might not read with copper.
I use a Ammonia Alert badge. They are good for a year as long as they stay wet. Only $8

I'll definitely have to check that out, I just pulled water out of the display to go into the qt, based on the reading I've been doing I've got a while before I bring any new fish into the system, mostly so the ich in the display dies off, it currently only has inverts, coral, and live rock in it so only patience for it, my concern lies in the qt at the moment. I've got salt water mixed up with a heater and circulation so I'm ready for bunches of water changes.

What caused that fish to get sick that quick overnight? What did the scooter bring in the tank for that to happen

The display has to be fishless for 9 weeks to be sure it's ich free. I been thru this myself.
The fish in the qt should be ich free after 3 weeks of copper. At that point u can remove the copper and keep them in till the display is ready.
The key is to test the copper level daily, as some types drop out. I prefer Cupramine. It's stable and easy to use. But u need the Seachem test kit to measure it.
Keep an eye on the ammonia levels. If they rise, you'll have to do water changes.
For future qt, keep a new filter sponge or pad in your tank to seed the bacteria. After a month it so, it will be loaded with bacteria, so u can start a cycle free qt at anytime.
I keep mine between my sump baffles. It's a pad for my aqua clear.

Yeah that's what I've been reading and planning on doing, I had a Condy take a trip through the filter which could have been what stressed them to allow the ich to pop up, all I know is any fish I bring in will go through qt, and the tank will be fishless for 8+ weeks, I haven't been home since earlier to see how the tang is doing but he was breathing pretty hard. Also no more condy's or for that matter a moving softie that could get sucked up. I took the filter off my DT and put it on the qt (the filter of course was cleaned since the Condy incident) to make sure there was no fluctuation of bacteria, I always keep a filter with sponge media in it and rinsed every three days if not more just to collect solids floating in the water coloum.

I was under the impression u were going to quarantine the new fish abd corals in the tank you are using copper in. If your using straight copper it can leach into the silicone. If im misunderstanding you just ignore me. Lol

No it's a sump with dividers I'm only filling each section of the sump no the whole thing so corals can have a section and the fish can have the other, I'm not mixing them.

I would not suggest trying to keep one until your tank is very mature and at least 90 gallons or bigger, and really if you dont have the time to QT it, and train it to feed on prepared foods, it's a total gamble on whether it will live at all. Good luck with the yellow tang, and be prepared to do lots of water changes.

Yeah, I read up on the dragonets and am aware of those challenges and the tank has been running a little over a year, i bought a bunch of pods and rotifers but all the fish have passed, they seemed to have been hit hard and fast as i saw the spots on christmas day, and that last fish died sometime last night. So at this time i have the quarantine tank at the ready for when my display tank is ready, and i'm waiting 2 months minimum to get any fish, and when i do they will be going directly into the qt to make sure they are safe, and won't bring any funk into my tank, it's a lesson i hated to learn this way and certainly unintentional.
