Has The Tyree Coral Gone Too Far?

In all fairness to Tyree and reeffarmers, Limited Edition is not exclusive to him. But, when you see his name, you know what you are getting (if it is a true piece). It is a brand name. Much like ORA, FHI, TCN, etc.

FWIW, I have yet to find any other monti quite as stunning as the sunset :)

It's true, all those mentioned by mecold are indeed excellent places to buy corals from. And you are buying the name, which i hate, but it gets frags sold...You get quality aquacultured frags, you can't go wrong except for the price on occassion.

I am personally under the opinion that he is an excellent marketer and if he can sell it for the price that he sells it for then it is obviously not just blah. It is not just Tyree that can do this there are other people who do put out limited editions of corals. IMO Tyree's stuff is always very healthy and has some of the best colors around. It is all about supply and demand. There is limited supply of his corals so therefore he can mark them up to higher prices.

But thats just me...

I agree, all of them offer great coral. I just feel that the name is used too often for selling points. When in reality the coral did not come from where people say they do.
I agree on buying the name if the name is worth it. Reefing is like most other things, you pay for the name, clothing, cars, electronics and so one. I guess my point is that if you dont know 100 percent that the coral came from Tyree, dont sell it as Tyree.
Maybe I was misleading on the first post, I was not trying to discredit anyones coral or the name of coral.

True. The prices LE corals sell for can be quite high. The funny part is, I have rarely paid any more for an LE than I have an ORA, or even a wild frag. Plus most hobbiest are more than willing to trade frags :)

This is the same problem you will find in regards to any named coral. Lets use "Tubs Blue Zoas" as an example. How many people have frags that they know beyond a doubt originated from Tubs' colony? Heck, I have seen blue zoas with red and green skirts marketed as "tubs blues".

With all due respect to vendors, if it looks, smells, and tastes like it, it still ain't. This doesn't mean I won't buy a frag of a sweet zoa if it doesn't quite match the name it is marketed as. I just will not knowingly try to pass it off as the "real deal" when I go to trade or sell frags.

I think it is funny how many people out there gripe and moan about the price of an LE coral, but if they do actually buy it from you the first question they ask is what is the lineage on it. If the same person were to buy an AKC registered puppy they would pay more for it than some mutt from a local breeder. It is the same sort of issue. I fell that if a lineage can be traced then the coral can and should be marketed a the Tyree LE whatever it is. Also if you actually read on reeffarmers website you will find out when and where Mr Tyree aquired all of those corals we all pine over. That being said he is obviously not the only one out there who grows and sells these corals anymore, that is why they are everywhere now. But if you want the coral straight from the source, with no question of lineage, then you better be willing to cough up the dough or someone else will.

Just my .02

Good point. Even though tyree names them (or decides they are "worthy of LE status"), he definately isn't the only one who has said corals. I have recieved frags from other hobbiests that became LE's only after I had them for months. One of my regrets is that I didn't purchase a red watermelon echino from snipersps at the time I purchased my le watermelon and pink lemonade. It was a great price then, long before it became an LE :)
