So 20 years ago I took my 55 gal tank and tossed it in the dumpster as my wife and I could no longer afford it with a new baby on the way. (we were also moving at the same time...)
That baby (and his sister) are now both grown up and have their own jobs!
For Christmas, my wife bought me a 180 gal. complete aquarium set up which is being made by Custom Aquariums with complete sump system stand, lights the works. I will not get it until February but trying to re-learn the hobby and learn what is new. Best yet now that I am older I can actually afford to do it right this time! My only tricky part is I travel for work like 150+ days a year so automation will be key!
So any advice you all have I will happily take!!

Oh and I have already purchased an Apex system figure start off with tech right from day 1!

Welcome to R2R. Wow! Merry Christmas to you! There is a lot that has changed and a lot that stays the same. Research is your best friend now. And the advice of some of the great folks here.

I've got one piece of advice:
Since she bought it you'll need to have her pay close attention to how it works and how to do water changes and other routine maintenance while you are away. You sir have got it made! :)

Welcome to Reef2Reef.

this is definitely a hobby for BOTH my wife and I... but I am normally the one that deals with the "technical" side of things. So all the set-up and testing will, for the most part, be my part but she is very capable and willing to stick her hand in and get wet to fix whatever. Add to that I have a good buddy down the street that would run over any time I need (he is also one of my employees soooo he has added incentive!! lol)

Welcome Aboard!!! I don't know...I always worry about people who start trying to cut corners right off the bat. ;)
not really trying to cut corners (if I was I would just hire a company to set it up and maintain it) It is more that this time around I have the money to do it right. I don't have to worry about affording a $500 part as I did 20 years ago when an $80 powerhead was a big purchase. So like my business I would rather get the right stuff right off the bat and not waste money on the cheaper but you will need to replace it sooner route.

One piece of advice I have is to try and know what you will want as far as coral and livestock 2-5 years down the road. That can help to determine what you need now, so you don't have to worry about buying something different in the future.
