Hello from Huntsville AL. Well I have just started (yesterday) my first reef tank. It is a 110 gallon tall and I just got some live rock......Boring I know. I place 25 pounds of rock and 200 pounds of live sand just to start the cycle.

I am looking for a good LFS or a reef club not to trade but to learn, any places to go would be great.

Welcome, there are a bunch from the Hunstville area on here. Check out the North Alabama Reef Club page on here.

Welcome aboard!

Ok so I just finished my aAquascape

Welcome, now lets see a picture!

You all have asked so here it is....

100 pounds live rock
200 pounds live sand (still waiting for it)
40 Gallons cycled water
One Clown
One Purple fish with Yellow tail
One Kenya Tree
5 Crabs (look like a hermit)
many snails and star fish (maybe sand sifters) to small to tell what kind, I think they came from my 10 pounds of rubble

The pictures are from my IPhone I will get better ones later this weekend.

Looking really nice. Looks like a well planned start. Keep us updated.

Need some help

Well, it looks as if the "live sand" I had ordered is straight from the beaches of southern California, including the oil tar and all.....

I need to know who has live sand (the real kind) I need around 100 Lbs like soon. Is the aragonite at the shops realy live or do they just say that, or am I better getting a couple of hand fulls from someone local and seading some Home Depot/Lowes aragonite sand?

home depot/Lowes aragonite was "tropical play sand" clearly labeled "not for traction of aquarium use" LOL. and also "silica free play sand from the carribean". It was aragonite and many used it.

It also is no longer available. the last bag I got was the memorial parkway home depot over 2 years ago.
IMHO you don't need live sand. All you need is a refugium fully of macro algaes like chaetomorphia. That will process the ammonia/nitrates and provide a source of pods as well.

With the refugium you could even (and some do) have a bare bottom setup with no sand at all.
