In tech school right now for the AF, not sure if I ask questions here or not so I'll wait for replies then bother you guys.

I had a reef tank before I left for Basic Training. (29G mixed) loved it and was honestly my first shot at owning any aquarium but I am a research fanatic so I had pretty good success. My dream aquarium is a 4-500 gallon aquarium built for Motoro Stingrays. My favorite animal and would love to have a pair one day.

Anyway I have some sump questions for an aquarium I'm looking at when I get to my first duty station so like I said I'll make sure it's okay to ask here first.

Welcome to R2R! We love questions so please ask away :)

I'm planning on getting the SCA 50 gallon P&P Cube.
I have time and want to do it the right way. (RO/DI, Kessil Tuna Blue 160we, filtration) I won't get to my first duty station until octoberish so I want to buy everything here and there and have a nice aquarium when I'm through.
My question is as far as the sump goes it only comes with a skimmer and a few media that I think most people switch out. If you were setting this up what would you put in the sump? Refuge or no? Ceramic media? I'm all ears/eyes.

Going to be a matter of personal preference. Myself I'm a huge fan of refugium. It offers natural nutrient reduction, filtration, and is a great area for pods to populate. Ceramic media is great if you dont have alot of live rock and want more surface area for bacteria to populate.

Welcome to R2R and thank you for your service! This is a great place to do your research when your making reef aquarium decisions.

We’re glad your here!

Welcome!!!!
Thank you for your service!
There is a TON of information readily available for you here. Be advised, there are a number of ways to skin the salty cat and you might get just as many recommendations when asked. Find a consensus backed by success and you should be safe. A universal truth regardless of methodology... PATIENCE grasshopper and slow down.
Looking forward to a build thread...? Yes?
P.S. Do you know for sure where your next duty station will be?
