Hello fishes of all ages. New to the forums but not new to the saltwater tanks in a way.

I am currently stepping up with my mother to give my dad some much needed help with his tank. Work has overtaken his life and we thought we would give him a helping hand.

We currently have a 55 gallon tank hoping by the end of the year to start cycling our new 250 gallon tank if all goes well.

In the tank we currently have 7 fish 2 shrimp 6 anaomes and several different corals. Our main issue with the tank as you will see in the photos is this weird redish green brown fuzz that is growing on all the rocks and the sand is getting a red build up on it.

I'm not sure on where to start with cleaning that stuff up so any direction will be a huge help.

Also I am wondering for testing wise what are the best testers out there for each test that is needed?

Welcome to R2R!

It looks like you have a bit of work to do. It looks like the tank has dinos (or possibly cyano) and I think I see an aiptasia or two as well. First thing is you should get some test results for, at the least, pH, specific gravity, nitrates and phosphates. There are more tests but those will give a good indication of where thing are. There are lots of good kits on the market. I would probably pick a basic set from Salifert. They are reasonably priced and considered accurate.

You can also take some of the tank water to most LFSs and they will test it. Post the results on R2R and people can offer advice on an action plan. Good luck.

Welcome to the community! It's nice to see more Canadians here. I'm from Toronto. I agree it could be dinos or cyano. Your dad probably has the test kits mentioned above. If not you will need to buy them (don't get API if you have to buy some... They're not good for saltwater). I suggest starting a new thread with these pics and test results under the nuisance algae section. That's a beautiful tank... It just needs a little TLC to get it back on track. :-) If you have more questions feel free to ask. The forum has a section for every part of the hobby. :-)

Here is just one of many threads that discusses dinos. Search Dino and Cyano and you will find a lot of info to consider.
