AHHHHHHH! British people kill me with there accents! Honestly when I heard a British accent I cant stop smiling! More recently I have talked to a few British people at Macna and other places, I either didnt pay attention to what the were saying because I was so fasinated with there accents or I just had to walk away because I could'nt contain my excitment! If I ever run into a British accent even if it just in a movie I CANT STOP SMILING!!! And then sometimes I walk around faking an accent! Its all so true when I was on vacation me and my friend faked accents the whole time! AND PEOPLE BELIEVED US!!!! They kept asking where we were from and we just kept saying Doncaster in Yorkshire, England! But they most likely figured we were not British when they heard my and my friend screaming ya'll and dang gum it from two different sides of the condo! LOL!

Good for you. BTW my wife is British and I am originally from "La Belgique"

Albert where in the UK is your wife originally from?

The variations in the British accent are many for such a small country. I bet you found that out often enough during your visits here Albert.

Sure did, those accents can vary a great deal, just like they do in Belgium where people who live within say 40 miles of each other have a different one, Bruges and Ghent are good examples of that and then move up further north to the Coast and it's different again, and of course the Antwerp one is a language of its own nearly :-)

She's originally from Bristol, but moved to the Midlands (Cheltenham), and then to the London area, and when she was 19 she came to the States but went back to the UK only to come back to the US a few years later, and has been here ever since, longer than I have .. and I came here in Jan 1980.

And when it comes to accents let's not even think about Wales, or Scotland, or Ireland :-) And then there are the "hot coal in the mouth" ones like Eton or Cambridge and so on to make it even more interesting ...

So how do you like Reef2Reef btw compared to that other forum we are both on ... ? Nice crowd here I feel. And not as much off the topic stuff as on NR.

Good to hear from you Mr Atoll Sir ...

I forgot to mention that when I was young .. and that is a long time ago :-) I used to visit an aunt of mine every summer for a few weeks in Blakedown, not too far from Kidderminster ... and loved to go to Torquay, which I did a few times when the weather was nice.

Of course London was nearly like a second home as when I worked for Hiltpn International I used to go there every few weeks, and also when I worked for Thos Cook for a while ... one of my favorite places was the Burlington Arcade and Jermyn street as I used to buy pipes from the Dunhill shop there and shirts from the many stores on Jermyn Street. And Foyles was my favorite book store, so big it was nearly like a department store ! :-) but that is all a long time ago as you well know.

Oh all, hope to visit the UK again in 2013 ... just need to make some $$$ ... as although being retired is nice, it does cut down on income quite a bit ... unfortunately.

Good to hear from you Mr Atoll Sir ...

So you wife has indeed moved around quite a bit. Coming from Liverpool we are called "Scousers" after the local dish Scouse a kind of stew the origins of which are not fully known. Liverpool is famous for lots of things but most people will think of the Beatles when you mention Liverpool. You only have to move 10 miles outside Liverpool to places like St.Helens and you will hear quite a different accent all together.

I have a friend who comes from Aberdeen Scotland and when he talks I can hardly understand a word he says esp if he is excited by something then I have no chance of understanding him what so ever. As for the Welsh and Irish they do indeed have their own languages but most speak English as well. Regarding accents from the likes of Eaton, Oxford and Cambridge we call them "talking with plums in their mouths"

This forum is nice and friendly for sure, maybe not quite as active as some others yet but I am sure it will gain members and hopefully the right kind of members as the membership can make or break a forum IMO.

Yes indeed, Liverpool and the Beatles is what people think of here when you mention the city ...

Oops on the coal in the mouth ... it's plum ! Those I can barely understand as they seem to "swallow" half of what they say :-)

And on accents : same here ... go to Kentucky, or even some parts of TX, and it can be very hard to understand them, and even here in GA in the South they sometimes speak "funny too" and of course all those odd expression here like "chewing the fat" for having a good talk or "a couple of threes" which is really 6, and the GA famous one: y'all come back now.

Anyway time for ablutions .. and then back to work on the book .. have to add some more material that I just realized I did not cover yet : Lighting ! :-)

TTYL here or on NR or both ... Happy New Year !

Oh, and with all those Yuma babies in the tank I can't siphon off the substrate to clean it up somewhat .. those snails seem to like to bring bits and pieces to the front in plain view. Oxydator refilled yesterday with the last of my 3% solution, so for the next one I am going to try the 6% after diluting the 35% I have.

Be well ...
