Hello!!

Any advice on the positioning of the rock would be great..

So they want you to kill or poison a fish to cycle a tank???? The tank needs to be able to process ammonia before you put in a fish. Fish + food will create ammonia. Ammonia will kill fish.

The local store gave you some bad advice about putting a fish in your tank at first tp cycle. I would take fish back and get credit back and do the Dr Tims fishless cycle .
I would find another fish store to buy from if they sold that to you...That clownfish will die quickly and I guess you would loos $30 or so...
Just trying to help

That wasn't the best advice, but you wouldn't be the first person to do it that way. I would buy some live bacteria to help speed the cycle up though. Just keep an eye on the ammonia levels. Clownfish can be pretty tough fish.

Do you reccomend returning it or frequent water changes

You can either return the fish or you can buy some Biospera or Dr Tim's fishless cycle bacteria and put it in the tank and the fish should be fine then.
Sounds good I'll stop by tomorrow and buy some is one bottle enough? I hope hes ok. Might return him I'll see how he does until tomorrow.

I would check the ammonia in the tank, do you have a ammonia test kit or ammonia badge in the tank. A small bottle is good up to a 30 gal tank. the big bottle will do a 75 gal tank.

Not familiar with that type, if it says you can use it in saltwater then I would, but how old is it. Bacteria in a bottle does have a expiration date. I would still get some bio spira or Dt tim's tomorrow as I know it works very well.

Here is a link to do fishless cycle. if to decide to take him back http://www.drtimsaquatics.com/resources/fishless-cycling
Billdg is right. Clowns are pretty tough and you can dose bacteria and do water changes but you need to test your parameters often

Good luck
I have strips I'll test it now. I've ordered the test kits with the vials it should be here tomorrow. Thanks for the help everyone sorry I should have asked if it was accurate information before purchasing him

It's not expired I get it often for my fw water changes or adding fish. I'll throw some in for now and get the one you recommended tomorrow. thanks!

Welcome to r2r and the salt life!
Good advice above. Id like to add to make sure you have some saltwater made and ready to water change at first signs of ammonia...watching a fish struggle to breathe with ammonia burn is never fun.

Welcome and good luck.

I like simple aquascapes. Looks good. Try to keep an inch clearance between the rock and the glass so algae scraping is easier. If you think you'll want more rock than you already have, you might as well add it sooner than later.

Hitchhikers are a valid concern. You'll learn to be skeptical of LFS advise though (excepting that there are good ones). You can always tell questionable advise bc it always leads to buying a fish or coral today. You'll begin to see the pattern. The peeps on here don't have a dog in the fight. They just want to see you be successful.
