hey guys.. i took my clownfish and firefish to the lfs, and they said the clownfish has fungus on his tail, so they gave me some stuff to treat it and some prime. they are back in the tank and everyone is being medicated. as for the firefish, they said he just likes to swim in the sand since he's a goby lol

DONT USE PRIME + COPPER, what are the other meds they gave you?

I would not trust that LFS, i can't see fungus in the picture and fire fish is not a goby its a dart fish and they don't love sand, they spend their time hovering in water feeding on planktons. Even wrasses that sleep in sand, if they are healthy they won't scratch (or "play") with sand. Fish only scratch when there is something itching its skin, in most cases its an external parasite.

i bought copper on my own from another lfs. i took the fish to my trusted lfs and they put the clownfish under the blacklight and she identified it as a fungus. i'll keep an eye on the firefish.

First step is a FW dip to check for flukes: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/freshwater-dip.248898/

If flukes show (as seen in the video), treat with Prazipro: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/prazipro.247598/

If no flukes, assume external parasites and treat with copper: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/copper-treatment.193343/

Dosing metronidazole (click here) in conjunction might be a good idea just in case this turns out to be brook: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/brooklynella.247938/
Really helpful info...

sorry i never came back to this thread, they seem to be doing fine with the medication and they are eating okay. here's some really bad pics (tank lights are off and they are pretty fast swimmers and a little camera shy)

I just wanted to let you know that using a "black light" to ID fungus (or any diseases at all) isn't a real method to do so. Fungus isn't something we see a lot of in saltwater... it's mainly a freshwater problem. What people usually think is a fungus on a saltwater fish is usually either Lympho (a virus) or a bacterial infection.

ah what the heck.. so much confusion.. i've been adding medicine to my tank for the last 2-3 days and everyone seems ok.. he's eating now, and my inverts are doing okay as well. he's not scratching or flashing but he's just swims and hangs out by the corner while the bigger one is more of an explorer.

Head 2 to Wal-Mart and pick up a 10g tank with a heater and a filter. They have cheap tanks that are include everything. $50 and you have a QT set up so you can treat your fish.

What medicine are you putting in your display? Copper will kill any corals, shrimp, snails or crabs you have in the tank.

I dont think he is using copper in the DT. He mentioned his LFS recommended a medication for treatment. Most of the information received from the lfs is incorrect in my opinion but i'm not an expert. Removal to a QT is the best course of action to protect these fish.

update! i ended up just going to my lfs yesterday and picking up a small 10g aquarium.. the guy that was supposed to get the clowns was there and he gave me a deal on it. $40 for tank with heater and filter. everyone as of right now is in QT. last night i did a water change to remove any meds and the inverts are still alive. the clownfish are eating and so is the firefish.. they seem okay but i'm going to watch them over the next week or two. i'll update everyone soon.

by the way... i'm actually a girl lol

Congrats on getting a QT. Every new fish you get from now on should go into there to make sure they aren't sick and won't make your healthy fish sick. To treat for ich you'll want to treat with Fritz Coppersafe. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTH68Z6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nd-yzbBPN55RR You'll need to slowly bring up the copper level to 2.0ppm over a few days. The copper will kill the ich parasites before they can attach to your fish and hurt them. You'll need a copper test kit, I use the API kit, you can find it here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006JDWH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Sb-yzbJ24FM6Z or see if you LFS can get it.

Sorry!!! By the way what medications are you using?

You'll also have to keep all fish out of your display tank for 76 days. Ich can live without fish for a while, and to make sure you don't make your fish sick again, you'll have to wait until it completes it's lifecycle and dies off.

The good news is once you've finished all this you'll have happy healthy fish and all new additions will be quarantined and treated as needed.

it's totally okay lol, i thought it was funny. and i'm using api pimafix? i think that's what it's called anyway. i've been using it for about 4 days (including DT) and the lady said only to use it for 5 with my inverts but now that i have QT i'll do the full 7 days like i'm supposed to. if any (god forBID!) signs of ich or velvet happen i'll dose copper but i'll probably wait a day or so before switching to another kind of treatment? unless you guys think i should dose asap after this medicine

okay, i think they'll be okay for awhile in the QT, a little cramped lol but it'll be okay.

Yes they'll be fine. Oh I meant to mention that they only need to be in the copper for 30 days. After that you can either use carbon to remove the copper, then they can just stay there until your 76 days is over. Keep an eye on ammonia too, it can get high quickly in a QT tank. I use Bio-spira in mine, it'll instacycle a tank so you can add fish without worrying about ammonia or nitrite.
