Help! I'm losing corals!

hmmm sorry to hear that...i would have said temp too after the symptoms, but you already ruled that out. Ill keep thinking

Your help is much appreciated... A local all star told us our lights are way to bright and to move them into a cave and give them about three weeks. They are prolly super p*****.

As of right now we are feeding them San Francisco Bay brand Brine shrimp.

I'm not sure how often I should be feeding our acan.. I just fed the corals this morning, and have been doing it once a week... I heard that acans like frequent feeding, but I don't know how much would be too much or too little..

reef life, we were thinking about doing that but haven't gotten that far, it's easier just to buy the pre made ones right now.

I don't know what's wrong, but I'd try feeding the acans some mysid instead of brine shrimp, they are nutritionally much better.. If your tank is still under a year old maybe there is not enough planktonic life to sustain your corals that eat. Do you have other corals that are thriving (in particular any other zoa or acans)?

I just picked up some mysis shrimp today and plan to feed them in the morning :)

We only have the one acan as of now, but we do have a small colony of Rastas that are so far so good... Our candy cane is doing awesome, our frogspawn is growing, and our moon coral is also doing great (actually trying to grow over some shells)

If ur running ur lights for 12 hours then I would reduce ur lights on time to around 8 or 9 hours! Also, lps tend to like a little bit of phosphate!

How about your source water? What are you using for top off and water changes? Are you dosing anything to the tank?

Ritter,
We get rodi water from our LFS, we use Aquavitro salinity salt with the rodi water for our changes, top off depends on the salinity in the tank 9 out of 10 times we use rodi water if the salinity is low then we top off with salt water.

Our blue lights come on at 9:30am, our mh turns on at 11 then off at 4:30, then the blues go off at 9:30pm. I have been cutting back the mh time by 30 min a day til we get down to 4 hour run time.

Have you checked the TDS of the RO/DI water? If you don't have a TDS meter maybe you could borrow one or have someone local (besides the LFS) to test it.

Swoosh- we had our mag tested a week or so ago and it was at a good level they said... I can't remember the exact number right now. Will get another test done this week..

Thunder - we used to run them for 11 hours before we were told to cut back as we were probably frying our tank. Lol!

Ritter - I will check to see if our local club has one we can borrow, since we dont have one...

Erickson - I disconnected the hood on my nano HQI and raised it about 8 inchs off the top of the tank pretty much turning the light into a pendent. I also installed a mini fan on the back to help with heat control, with a timer running it ever 10 to 15 minutes for cooling. I finally got the temp between 79* and 80* consistantly. I'm using the JBJ protein skimmer supplied with the tank and its working great. I do have to clean it often, but with a nano tank housekeeping task are a daily ritual, plus I have the time, and enjoy it. The following are my tank parameters;

Tank Parameters:
29 Gallon HQI JBJ Nanocube
Lights: 150 W / 10,000K(1) / LED Moonlights - 4 ea / MH ran for 10 hours, Moonlights for 3
Protein Skimmer
2 Returns, 1 Korolias 435 Powerheads (I'm adding a 4th powerhead this week!
1 Media basket from "Intank" (3 chamber unit) - 1.running cut filter pad, and sponge filter (as a pre-filter), 2. Chemi-pure Elite, 3. Purrigen & charcoal mix (I got rid of thefilter box that came with tank - I highly recommend the "Intank"filter chamber! I also have a heater in an open chamber, and skimmer.
Water Quality: Reef Crystals
Salinity - 1.026
Temp - 79.2
PH - 8.1
Nitrite - 0.0
Nitrate - 1.0
DKH - 8.1
Ammonia - 0.0
Phosphate - 0.005
Maint:
Daily I use a Mag Float to scrap the glass. I clean my small pre-filter pad and possiblytop off evaporation water, check skimmer.
Once weekly I spot feed corals PhytoFeast and mysis, and dose Seachem fuel, andclean media chamber.
Weekly I change 3 to 5 gallons of water. Monthly I change out my Purigen and Chemipure Elite. I clean the skimmer every two to three days, its small. Hope this helps, Thanks - Thunder.

If you're using RODI water from your LFS, I would get it tested for anything you test for in your aquarium.

I recently found out that my city adds ammonia to the water to mask the taste of chlorine. When I tested my RODI water for ammonia, it was around 2ppm, which was enough to cause problems with my tank just from daily top off, weekly water changes, and livestock bioload. I had to switch to doing bi-weekly water changes and reduce the amount my fish got fed to allow for the system to compensate for the ammonia.
