Help me get a Tang

It's pretty clear OP understands the arguments for NOT putting a Tang in a 20 gallon. His/Her mind is made up.

@TimothyTran hopefully this decision is exceedingly temporary. I wouldn't advise what you're doing, but please make sure the tank is fully cycled and the fish is healthy. Upgrade the tank or rehome when needed.

@Timothy Tran, your just setting yourself up for failure. Your innovative marine tank is not a quarantine tank. Even if you have the best intentions of upgrading life still happens and then your stuck having to rehome the fish, if your actually responsible. Honesty though, your responses to general information and concerns suggest you could care less and possibly just trolling to get a laugh. If you have a fish tank and can't find a tang then you don't need a tank. I suspect you just like the argument

Guys, berating someone for asking a question like this doesn't foster a good discussion nor does it educate someone. Saying it is cruel, etc without evidence for your opinion just leaves more questions and results in the person feeling attacked. Explain your point of view without attacking the OP. Hopefully future R2R users will be able to read this thread and understand why a tang is a bad idea in a small tank.

I personally have a 4" yellow tang in my 40B. I keep it well fed with many feedings per day along with nori every other day. As far as swimming room goes, it is plenty happy. It spends most of its time swimming in the current and occasionally pecking at the rocks. No anxious pacing or spastic behavior. The behavior could change in the future, but for now it is happy and compliments the tank well.

Except the fact that in the third post he said he already knows he shouldn't do it. Because of that the "why" no longer needs to be explained and the reason(s) can be found quickly in a search anyway.

OP is just looking for confirmation bias, and perhaps like to argue.

Well... really any nice color tangs, and its for my IM 20g thats why im trying to get it so small. Also i know tangs are not supposed to be in a small tank like this, but its my choice... I've seen tangs in such smaller tanks aswell. Really my goals with the tang is just to put in my tank right now til i get a red sea 250, and just put him in there when i'm ready.

Not me, btw lol

What do you mean when you say "not me"? You clearly said that you know its wrong but you're going to do it anyway. I don't understand.

First off, nobody berated him. The OP has gotten solid advice and chooses to think it's a joke. Oh and a 40 breeder isn't a 20 gallon which after sand and rock, might hold 15. Nothing wrong with actually caring for your animals and if he was actually showing general concern then the responses would be different I'm sure. I have had a purple tang for 6 years in a 75 so I'm not the tang police but a tang in a 20 gallon and thinking it's a joke isn't good for the hobbyist or the fish.

You said you wouldn’t be happy when you see a thread about somebody posting their fish getting sick when moving to another tank... which is definitely not gonna be me

Not what I’m doing at all... some post just make me feel like people think I’m a DA

I just answered his question, that's it, what he does is up to him. I figured the tang police would give him there opinion.

Great reply. Really, has anyone asked a tang if he likes being in a 120gal tank? We just assume they are OK.

I don’t think it’s truly horrible. A 1” Tang would probably have enough room to swim in a 20G for 4ish month max, but no longer than that. I have a blue tang in my 46 and she is very healthy and eats like a pig (for those wondering, she was a rescue along with 2 chromis and a yellow tang). She is probably 2.5” and is doing well in my 3’ tank, no aggression whatsoever and seems fat and healthy. I definitely will be rehoming her when the time comes and since I doubt the OP will change his mind on a tang, I really hope he will too once it is nearing 2”. Please keep the health of the fish in mind and not just what you want. I am trusting you will make the right decision!

Lol. And this post makes sense how with keeping a tang in 20 gallon? Are you implying we shouldn't keep fish at All?

Probably not. There is no evidence they do just as well in our tanks as in the ocean.

Your thread is asking to help get you a tang and were supposed to think ypur not going to "really" get one?
I am... trying to see what tang should i get though, don't just want to buy any tang and then not be happy with it in the future.
Get what i'm trying to say?

Not trying to come down on you man. A tang in a 20 gallon tank after sand and rock is not a good idea. Trust me, there's a lot of fosh I'd love to have but I know is need the extra space to house them responsibly. I'd hold off until you have a bigger tank at least cycling.

Give me a break. Your on a reef forum. If you have an issue with any of us owning fish then your in the wrong place. No evidence, lol. Tell that to people that have kept fish over 20 years in a tank. I bet your feeding your fish as you read this......

If you want to get technical, any fish of any species in a fish tank no matter the size of the tank is not going to be better off than in its natural environment, the OCEAN. Really who decides what is the proper fish for a certain size tank, are there scientific studies that have been done. Really all it is, is someones opinion, i listen to peoples opinions and make up my own mind. I have 16 fish in a 92 gallon thriving reef, some are a good size, oh and 3 of them are fat and sassy tangs, a yellow, a purple and a hippo!
