HELP!! I added a Palani Tang this afternoon, pretty large one, acclimated and put him in the tank and he aint doing good. Swimming sideways and all, occasionally ending up side down. Breathing a little heavy, Not sure what to do or if there is anything to do. Its an 11" fish, Ive had fish struggle in the past at first but its been a few hours now and doesn't seem to be improving. Anyone have any suggestions? @Humblefish @twilliard if you have any input I would welcome it cause I think hes a gonner, and an expensive one at that.

How did you acclimate? Large tangs ship very very poorly because they are already dirty fish and the larger they are, the dirtier they are. All of that ammonia takes over as soon as the bag is open the ammonia begins to turn toxic. Every minute exposed to bag water you risk burning your fish.

If you have methelyn blue or malichite green it can help provide relief in a bath for ammonia burn, which I suspect is the culprit here.

Unfortunately, there's not much else you can do but ensure an ammonia free tank with high water quality and ensure that tons of oxygen is present. (Add another bubbler or adjust the powerhead to break the surface) - Dussumeri tangs can be relatively hardy so cross your fingers!

Drip acclimation. Didnt stayed in the bag water during drip so that may be the case. My water is really good as far as that goes. Nitrates and phospates very low and ammonia is 0. Do you think I should add aerator, in dt or sump.

Does he look bloated at all? I'll ask the mods to move this over to fish disease for you.
@melypr1985 @aykwm @Humblefish
Not a disease. He looks good as far as color and I had a video of him in the display he was in prior to shipping, very active and eating well. He ate on Monday, and we waited until yesterday to ship to purge him. No visible signs of bloating or disease.

You drip acclimated without the bag water? I'm confused.

Yes I would aerate more!

I don't drip acclimate fish. Match the temp and salinity perfectly then put him right in. I'm sorry I know that doesn't help this time.

You saw him in the old DT? Has this fish been in captivity a while? I'm curious if he was captured improperly and having air bladder issues

Where did he come from?

They had him for 11 months, or so Im told. Trying to upload the video of him in the old DT and him now in mine. Lights just went out so I will keep my eye on him. Pointed the power heads up higer to break the water and added an aerator for now. Not much I can do now but wait. This will be a $300 mistake, and its not even the money, its a beautiful fish to have her die like this. Im real messed up over it. Thanks for the feedback on it @Humblefish you have helped me many times before, sadly most of them have been after I made the mistake.

Tryin but it wont work
Upload the video to youtube and the post the link.

I would say, the shock from coming from one system to another. Like you stated, it is a wait and see.

+1 Just copy & paste the Youtube URL into the text box.

Unfortunately, it's hard to make any kind of diagnosis here without more info.

I would be confident in saying that ammonia build up during acclimation is a major contributing factor at this point. If you are going to drip acclimate any fish that has been shipped (and there is no chance of copper being involved) then use prime to help with ammonia during the drip. I'd love to see the videos if you can get them loaded though.

heres the Youtube version. Clarity sucks so I doubt any of you will be able to make anything out of it, my guess is the ammonia as well. I didnt know once the bag opened that it starts that process. Figured when I shined the light ins the bag and saw him swimming around in there he was good to go, but that was prior to opening. He came in about 4 gallons of water believe it or not.

Yeah, that's not normal. If it were my fish, I'd do the methylene blue bath in hopes of helping heal the damage to the gills from the ammonia.
