I seem to have a problem with my Green hammer head coral, I am new to this and just finding my feet.
It was doing very well and growing well. then over night it has retracted and this morning it has deteriorated significantly. Any idea what is doing this? all water parameters are constant.

hi,is this falling apart?? covered in like a gel coat?

sorry to say, carefully remove, try not to let gel or pieces float free, poss use container or net ,discard, looks like brown jelly disease :(

That's the thing, I have been testing salinity, KH, Calcium, Ph and Magnesium, Nitrites and Nitrates weekly and nothing has changed. Water changes are automatic and at 6% per week. I don't know where else to look for changes.

how old is tank, how long have you had hammer?lets start there :)

no :(

do you have other corals ? how new hammer,? age of tank?

The tank is 240L and around 7 months old, Mixture of fish and Corals. Corals are doing well and growing. I started getting problems when I put the green moon coral in (now bottom left of picture). Diatoms went through the roof and a bush coral I had disappeared over night along with a red brown mushroom. the bush coral had the same symptoms as the hammer. The hammer has been in with the leather and red mushrooms for around 5 months and all happy.
Nitrates pretty much zero, KH 8.3, Ca 468, Mg 1440, SG 1.026, pH 8.1 and temp 78 deg F so parameters seem really good.

tank looks good ,corals look good, numbers look good ,not exactly sure what is a bush coral?lps? sounds like bjd, poss introduced w moon ,did that show any similar signs and did you blow off anything to help it ??poss the spread of the bjd??
just not sure at this point

It was an SPS I think, not so good with names. Yes I did try to blow the debris off the coral initially so have learnt a valuable lesson there. Bush coral below. Again it was doing really well and went overnight. I just hope it doesn't spread to the other corals. I will have to do some research to see if there is something I can use to kill the bacteria.
Thanks Very much for your help.

Tank looks too clean.. nitrates are zero, what are phosphates? Good chance corals are starving..

I see what looks like a brown film over the coral. I would give it GENTLE blasts with a turkey baster and check your nitrate and Phosphate level
these prefer moderate light and water flwo and for me do best at lower third of tank.

Thanks for replying to me.
I will check the phosphates, doing more research I am quite sure it is brown jelly disease. I could literally see the coral breaking apart before my eyes. literally only took an hour for the bush coral to break apart.

Yeah, it probably is brown jelly. Keep in mind, brown jelly isn't a disease, it's the result of any number of causes. Could be infection, stress etc. In my experience with brown jelly, it has almost always been caused by lack of nutrients that stresses the coral into this state, and it seems that the green hammers are more sensitive than some of my others.
